WHEN YOU NEXT VISIT CANBERRA, DO IT
IN STYLE. BY MONA ATTAMIMI.
We stayed at The Chifley on Northbourne and enjoyed
the best of high fashion, luxury, fine dining and
wining. The Chifley is one of the best hotels in the area, not
just for its comfort but its central location to major
attractions. It is a five minute walk to the city centre, close to
Tilleys Café (a legendary lesbian venue) and the new
gay/lesbian nightclub Cube.
When we arrived we were greeted by the general
manager, Matthew, who presented us with two free passes to
the Vivienne Westwood exhibition -- not to be missed! But
before we traipsed off to the National Gallery we checked
out our room and there was a spa right next to the bed, a
relaxation CD, essential oils and an eye pack. The Chifley also
has a great pool, complementary in-house movies, 24 hour
room ser vice and rooms with balconies. So ... should we stay
or ... ? Tough call! Actually, we went down to cool off in the
cosy setting of the bar.
After dragging ourselves out of the hotel we went to the
exhibition -- a theatrical experience. You can see Westwood's
early interest in punk, S&M and street culture. There were
some enormously extravagant gowns worn by the likes of
Linda Evangelista, street wear designs, grungy pirate
costumes and chic tailor made suits. Something for everyone.
Our high fashion experience was complimented by
fabulous fine dining at The Northbourne Restaurant at The
Chifley Hotel. We finished an entrée of sizable oysters from
Clyde River topped with Midori, lime and pineapple or thinly
sliced ginger. There were oysters with blue vein cheese, sweet
chilli sauce and of course natural is always delish! They have
a whole selection of scrumptious dishes elegantly presented.
The restaurant uses market fresh local produce; their
cheese comes from Tilba Tilba and the meals require the
accompaniment of wine from the local vineyards. No wonder
this restaurant won the award of excellence for Best Hotel
Restaurant in the ACT.
The next morning after dipping in the pool we had a
delicious buffet breakfast and stuffed ourselves with
croissants, bacon, scrambled eggs, pastries, hot chocolate and
everything you could imagine that would sustain us for
shopping and market hopping. Canberra has great markets.
We headed to the Gorman House Market, a hidden secret
that must not be missed. This arty market is possessed with
weird, wonderful, exotic and yet buyable objects and a whole
range of international dishes.
Then we headed to the Old Bus Depot Market which
features old, new, kitsch, collectors' items, art, Ethiopian
food, plants, pottery...I could go on and on...
Theere is so much to do in Canberra this summer and at
The Chifley on Northbourne.
