Home' LOTL : January 2005 Contents SA'S SAME SEX STRUGGLE
Adelaide's GLBT community turned out in their hundreds last
month to support the South Australian government's
Statutes Amendments (Relationships) Bill supporting same-sex
relationships rights. Community activists and politicians
speaking on December 6 outside the SA Parliament House
urged the Legislative Council not to delay debate by sending the
Bill to the Social Development Committee.
Former AMA President Dr Kerryn Phelps, a surprise speaker
at the rally, was warmly received by the crowd, and spoke out
against the use of organised religion to contribute to "continued
injustice, continued inequality, continued disrespect for our
lives, for our relationships and our love." The Let's Get Equal
campaign delivered 24,000 letters to the Upper House on
MARDI GRAS GEARS UP
Tickets to the 2005 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras
Party are now available. New Mardi Gras co-chair, Steph
Sands, is urging party goers to get in early. "Last year was a
great result with all tickets sold before the event. That did,
however, mean that some people missed out on what was
widely believed to be one of the best parties in recent years."
Early bird tickets are priced at $65 (concession), $89
(members) and $99 (full price). Tickets can be purchased from
Ticketek (02) 9266 4800 or www.ticketek.com.au "We've
already had an above average number of enquiries regarding
next year's Party, particularly from the US and Europe," said
Sands. NSW Minister for Tourism, Sandra Nori, who launched
the New Mardi Gras 2005 Festival Guide and imagery last
month said she believed that after years of trepidation about
travelling, 2005 would see a substantial number of tourists hit
Sydney, especially for Mardi Gras season.
To increase the international focus of the event, New
Mardi Gras has established a partnership with Pride London.
The newly formed collaboration will facilitate the promotion
of tourism and community harmony between the two cities,
and is supported by both cities' tourist boards and their
respective mayors. The 2005 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi
Gras Party will be held at Fox Studios on Saturday March 5.
