Home' LOTL : June Contents COULD YOU CHOOSE: MUSIC OR COMEDY?
We’re never going to choose: we will al-
ways do both; one without the other is not
an option for us. That’s The Topp Twins –
a combination of everything.
YOU MUST BE PRETTY GREAT FRIENDS TO BE ABLE
TO WORK SO CLOSELY TOGETHER.
Well, we’ve got a very close connection
because we’re twins – that’s never going to
go away. We shared a womb; everything’s
easy after that.
YOU’VE PERFORMED AT MAJOR FOLK MUSIC
FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD. YOU MUST HAVE
SOME AMAZING TRAVEL STORIES.
Every trip is an adventure – we’ve got a
great life and we love it.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN YOUR
UPCOMING NSW AND QLD TOUR?
Having fun with our crowd. Can’t wait to
check out all the local lesbians at the show.
LYNDA, YOU MARRIED DONNA AND WOMAN’S DAY
MADE IT A COVER STORY. JOOLS, DO YOU HAVE A
PARTNER AT THE MOMENT?
No, I’m happily single and best friends
with my ex.
AND LYNDA, WHEN YOU GOT MARRIED IT WAS STILL
ILLEGAL IN NEW ZEALAND. HOW DID YOU FEEL
WHEN NEW ZEALAND FINALLY LEGALISED GAY
MARRIAGE ONLY A FEW MONTHS LATER?
Donna and I were there in parliament
when the bill was passed and we celebrat-
ed with all the gays and lesbians that were
there. It was a magic, magic night.
AND I’VE HEARD YOU CONSIDER YOURSELVES
ACTIVISTS – HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK IT IS
THAT LESBIAN CELEBRITIES BE OUT, IN TERMS OF
BEING ROLE MODELS FOR YOUNGER PEOPLE?
Yes we are activists. It’s really important
to be actively out as a lesbian and as an
YOU’VE BEEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF PROGRESSIVE
SOCIAL CHANGE, CAMPAIGNING FOR A NUCLEAR-
FREE NZ, MAORI LAND RIGHTS, A HALT TO THE
1981 SPRINGBOK TOUR, AND GAY LAW REFORM.
DO YOU THINK, AS SKUNK ANANSIE INSISTS, THAT
Everything is political.
THE FORMER NEW ZEALAND PRIME MINISTER
HELEN CLARK SUGGESTED THAT YOU HAVE BEEN
INSTRUMENTAL IN CHANGING HER COUNTRY’S
ATTITUDE TO GAYS. THAT ’S A PRETTY BIG NOD...
Yes it is. We were humbled and elated by
her comments. She’s been quite a big in-
fluence on lesbians as well.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR WORK TO
EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT BREAST CANCER?
(We’ve) just been open and honest about
it to the public. If that helps other women
and their caregivers going through breast
cancer, then that’s great.
SOME OF YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES, OR
MUSICIANS YOU ADMIRE?
When we were young we were influenced
by the great old yodellers – June Holms
and Shirley Thoms. At an early age we
found our own style. We both love Iris
Dement and Dolly Parton.
YOU’VE HAD SOME AMAZING GIGS – FROM
PERFORMING AT THE RUGBY WORLD CUP TO
SUPPORTING MIDNIGHT OIL. WHAT ARE SOME OF
YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS?
Performing with the Auckland Philhar-
monic Orchestra was amazing...to hear 75
people play our original songs was really
exciting. An early highlight was playing
at Women 150 Festival in Melbourne 30
IF YOU WEREN’T COMEDIANS/MUSICIANS, WHAT
WOULD YOU BE?
If Lynda could have her time over again
she would be a professional Polo player
and international Playgirl. Jools would
have been a Ranch hand with a horse and
a dog and slept in the bunkhouse.
Lynda: Fly-fishing, horse riding and Don-
na, my wife.
Jools: My dog, my horse and my pussy.
WHAT’S SOMETHING QUIRKY ABOUT YOU THAT LOTL
READERS PROBABLY WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT?
Jools does decoupage on tables and Lynda
loves getting her toenails painted bright
LYNDA, YOU’VE SAID, ‘ WE WILL NEVER GET TO
A POINT WHERE WE CAN’T GO ON ANY MORE
BECAUSE WE’RE TOO OLD.’ SO I GUESS YOU CAN’T
SEE YOURSELVES EVER RETIRING?
When we can’t go any further and we
can’t get on the stage, we’ll get some
young lesbian nurses to help us.
