Home' LOTL : December 2004 Contents A TOUCH OF VENICE IN DARLING HARBOUR
IF YOU ARE DESPERATE TO IMPRESS
YOUR DATE, CONSIDER A CRUISE FOR
TWO ABOARD SYDNEY GONDOLAS.
A LOTL FEATURE.
Venice is a magical floating city where gondolas weave
their watery way down canals and underneath tiny
stone bridges, passing piazzas, palaces and crooked
cobbled streets. If you can't make it to Venice this month, but
still want a touch of Italian romance this summer, make a
date with Sydney Gondolas.
The woman behind this new venture is Marg Girdwood
(pictured) who is dedicated to offering her guests a very
special way of experiencing Sydney Harbour. "Our guests
share time together away from the pressure of their day to
day lives. They can relax in the comfort and privacy of a
weatherproof gondola -- a unique craft where the driver
stands on the back allowing guests to be together in their
own private cabin," explains Marg.
"The cabin is set up so that you can kick back and relax
while enjoying food and wine. Meals can be provided or you
can BYO everything." The cabin affords its inhabitants
comfy seats, cushions, wraps, a table, ice bucket, glasses and
tealight candles. You are so close to the water that if you
drape your hand outside the gondola's weatherproof
cladding you can feel the silky water that surrounds you.
We were thrilled at the way the craft cruised smoothly
through the water unobtrusively, offering a totally different
perspective on the underrated stretch of water which lies
between Cockle Bay and the Anzac Bridge. Soak up the
bewitching views that have made Sydney Harbour famous:
from the gentle spectrum of glittering coloured lights to the
myriad vessels that glide along the velvety water like exotic
water beetles. Cuddle up to your girl and sup on your favourite
wine and nibblies as you whisper sweet nothings in each
other's ears. The cosy cabin is roomy for two or fine for four.
The best news of all? Sydney Gondolas is an ethical,
lesbian owned business committed to quality customer
ser vice. "The gondola is the only commercial craft on Sydney
Harbour that we know of that offers complete privacy from
the crew and exclusive use -- we don't mix bookings," says
Marg. What a way to begin -- or end -- the perfect evening!
Prices range from $80 to $220pp. Cruises leave from
Darling Harbour or Pyrmont.
