MY TWO DISCOVERIES THIS MONTH ARE
AUSSIE GIRLS AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE
REST OF THE WORLD TO HEAR THEM.
BY NIC VAN DYKE.
Beyond Coming is the debut album by Melbourne born
singer/songwriter Chloe. Born in Australia, Chloe moved
overseas to further her voice and piano playing and landed an
internship at Nettwerk records, the home of Sarah McLachlan
and Lilith Fair. Now, if that wasn't inspiration enough, while she
was there she overheard a conversation between Sarah and
Tracy Chapman which inspired her to pick up a guitar and write
her first song.
"They were talking to each other about their music and
how lucky and grateful they were that they got to do this for a
job, that they got to say something and somehow affect people
and make a difference in their lives," Chloe remembers. After
spending the next few years writing, recording, and performing
in the US, Chloe is ready to share with us Beyond Coming
which she describes as a genre-bending soundscape of lush
beats, pop, folk, soul and rock.
In Year 8 Sarah Blasko's music teacher said to her "Young
lady, you do not have a musical bone in your body," and it was
after this that the Sydney singer set out to prove her wrong. She
started a band with her sister when she was 16 and is now the
proud creator of debut album The Overture and the Underscore.
Her music is a unique mix of folk, pop and electronica.
"Essentially I wanted there to be something really classic
about the album", says Blasko. "It was really important to me
that my voice and the songs had some character and that there
was an intimacy to them. We tried to achieve this by using little
or no effect on the voice and not going too far with overdubs."
Catch Sarah performing songs from the album at Homebake in
Sydney on December 4 and The Falls Festival in Victoria and
Tassie at the end of the month.
If you didn't get to see Sarah McLachlan perform live
when she was here in May then the next best thing is available,
the live DVD. It chronicles her whole 2004 Afterglow world
tour and is simply called Afterglow Live. What a great
Christmas stocking filler!
One woman not to miss live this December is the very
talented Jen Coher who is performing a string of dates across
the East Coast including Sandringham Hotel Newtown, Dec 2,
The Brass Monkey Cronulla, Dec 3, The Rev Brisbane, Dec 7,
The Great Northern Byron Bay, Dec 8, and Northern Star
Newtown, Dec 9.
But if punk/metal/mish-mash is your thing then pop this in
your diary. Two piece outfit BugGirl launch their CD in
Sydney on December 18 @ Newtown. Their first film clip from
the album Looming Shadows features performers from Gurlesque
and was shot at Sydney's Annandale Hotel.
