SHE'S THE FACE BEHIND THE VOICE ON
NEW QUEER RADIO STATION BEAT FM.
LOTL SPOKE TO SARAH SHANNON.
SARAH SHANNON PHOTOGRAPHED BY FIORA SACCO
Describe your role at Beat FM. I do the drive show at Beat
FM called The Red Room which airs 4--7pm Monday to
Friday 87.6 FM. It's pretty much music and chats for 3 hours
You're a very polished radio host. How did you get so
smooth? Well, thank you. Sometimes I question whether or
not it's smooth! I guess experience is the key to any job. I
only really started in radio about three and a half years ago,
Sydney's new station Fbi 94.5 and they have given us a
considerable amount of training, for which I am grateful! I
also think that the key to being smooth is being relaxed!
Listeners aren't aware that they're listening to a total
babe! I quite like that the listeners can't see me. I don't have
to worry about what I wear or doing my hair. Makeup is not
in my repertoire either!! I did TV in Adelaide at Channel 7
for five years and was surprised at how much the attention
made me feel uncomfortable.
Describe your personal taste in music. I'm a huge fan of
breaks and most electro/funk music, I also enjoy electro
clashed with punk. I work off a play list at Beat and put my
energies into the talks rather than the choice of music.
Favourite inter view so far? Ooh, hard, I have had on the
most outrageous range of people from fetishists to fat busters.
I guess of the more high profile people, Dorothy McRae
McMahon was gorgeous, as was Paulini. As far as someone
I aspire to be like, Julie McCrossin I am a huge fan of.
Most awkward live moment? Thankfully I don't get too
worked up about stuff-ups now. Although when I had
Miriam in (There's Something About Miriam) we were just
winding up, I thanked her and was just announcing the next
song when she got the computer's mouse cord (which I need
to start the music) caught around her leg and proceeded to
pull it off the desk and out of the terminal. There was
certainly some stutters and stammers then as I tried to sort
out starting the computer without the mouse!
Plans for this summer? Going back to Adelaide to see
family for a few weeks, I absolutely adore my family and after
a tragic death only a few short months ago spending as much
time with them is what I want to do.
Who will Sarah Shannon be in five years' time? I love radio
so much, so I certainly hope I'll continue doing that. Talk
back is the area that I really want to focus on down the track.
Listen to Sarah on The Red Room, Beat FM 87.6
Mondays to Fridays 4--7pm.
