Home' LOTL : November 2004 Contents THE BENTSTIX GIRLS WITH TRUDI VALENTINE
A LESBIAN FIELD HOCKEY GROUP HEADS
FOR EUROPE. LOTL INVESTIGATES.
What is it about dykes and games with sticks? There's
golf, softball, snooker, and hockey -- just about every
lesbian has a passion for one or more of these sports. Some
even form social groups around these activities to
incorporate their love of the game (and sometimes of each
other!). And there's other benefits as well, especially when
the Gay Games or Mardi Gras sports festival roll around.
At times like these, girls who like a little less conversation
and a lot more action are bound to be pleased.
So the girls at Bentstix Hockey have found. The Sydney
based gay and lesbian Field Hockey club will play in the
inaugural Pink Hockey Championships at the Euro Games
(European Gay and Lesbian Sports Championships) in
Utrecht, Holland in June 2005.
Bentstix will compete against field hockey teams from all
over Europe. The club received an invitation from the Dutch
Gay & Lesbian Hockey Club to play in Holland, and will be
amongst a very small group of non-European sporting teams
competing in these games. Field Hockey is not an official
sport in the upcoming Gay Games in Chicago or Rendezvous
Montreal in 2006, and for the Bentstix Club this will be a
great opportunity to compete on an international level.
"We are going to Holland not only to win the first Pink
Hockey Championships but also to have some great fun, and
the Dutch have promised us a great time," says team
organiser Karen Johnston.
In order to get to Holland, Bentstix are holding various
fundraising activities to raise money to finance the trip. There is
an upcoming Harbour Cruise Party on November 13 featuring
DJ Stephen Simpson and new Drag Diva Trudi Valentine.
Trudi, a major field hockey talent herself has lent support to the
cause and will be hosting a party night during Mardi Gras 2005.
"We are also looking for more women players who want to
participate in this exciting event", says Karen. "We want to take
a big Australian contingent and really ser ve it up to the
European girls, particularly following the Germans' strong
win during the Sydney Games in 2002". For further
information or to become involved in Bentstix, contact
Karen at email@example.com or on 0412 969 680.
Sydney's Gay and Lesbian summer softball competition will
be holding a slow pitch competition from November 2004
to March 2005.
Games will again be held on Tuesday nights at 6pm with all
games played at the softball diamonds at Moore Park on
Robertson Road (near the netball and tennis courts on Anzac
Parade). It's a great chance for people interested in playing
softball this summer to come and have a hit, and see what they
think. It doesn't matter how good you are -- this competition is
open to all levels. Sydney Outfielders especially seek more
lesbian players. Games start (Round 1) on Tues Nov 2. Visit
www.sydneyoutfielders.com or contact Adrian Richardson
on 0419 693 779 for more information.
