LABOR'S LOVE LOST
As a long-time Labor voter I have this comment to make
about the election result: No wonder Labor lost the election.
Where is the Left Labor that could've romped it home if they
had gone into bat for minority groups as they used to:
immigrants, refugees, detainees, aborigines, gays and lesbians
... It's no good playing conser vative, Latham. The Liberal
Party does it so much better than you do. Yes, Labor has lost
its way and I no longer vote for them. So we thousands of
queers neglected to write letters protesting the Marriage
Legislation Amendment Bill while thousands of right wing
people did, and you based your policy on this fact alone? Well
guess what: the same right wing weirdos who wrote those
letters voted Howard back in. And your lack of support for
us translated into our lack of support for you. Not only did
the vast majority prefer Howard to your confused, right wing
policies -- I'm sure a few gays and lesbians voted for him as
well. Why? Well, if we can't have equal rights we can at least
have low interest rates! Like other normal people many of us
are struggling with mortgages and raising families. As a
friend of mine said of Howard vs. Latham: It was either be
screwed by a prick with lots of experience or be screwed by a
prick with none. --- Rosie D., via email.
THIS COUNTRY SUCKS
The marriage ban by Labor and Liberal show how
homophobic our politicians are, and the general community.
There is an 'us and them' mentality in Australia. It is seen in
the derogatory comments gays and other minorities have to
cope with every day. It is seen in a lesbian woman leaving
Australia to live in Canada because she and her friend will be
treated equally. It is seen in our public vs. private education
system. It is seen in the long battle for equal rights by

Aborigines. I am subjected to derogatory comments every
day of my life. It seems to be okay to say and do what you like
to homosexuals -- even the police turn a blind eye to
discrimination. Just ask the gay Wollongong University
students if homophobia exists. Homophobia is sex
discrimination -- it's actually against the law. We have an anti-
discrimination board, we have anti-discrimination legislation,
we have human rights and EEO legislation but in the real
world they don't protect me or any other homosexual. They
call this country the lucky country -- but it depends on your
sex, your status, your sexual preference, your religion and of
course your skin colour. I won't vote for either the Liberal or
Labor party. This country disgusts me. I'm ashamed to call
myself an Australian. --- Val Threlfall, via email.
Congratulations LOTL on a great October issue. Excellent
inter views with both my favourite women in music -- k.d. and
Missy! I was on cloud nine when I opened up my favourite
monthly read. --- Chris Evans, Ashfield NSW.
Well, thank goodness for New Mardi Gras. I had a great time
at Sleaze as did all of my girlfriends. It's good to know that
while the world is in the doldrums, NMG can still organise a
superb party. What a great weekend -- much better than the
weekend that followed ... --- Ange, via email.
