Best thing about living in Sydney? What we ain't buggered up
yet -- what remains of its natural beauty (I add the Harbour
Bridge and the Opera House to that though); the weather, the
salt, the water. Also what remains of the simple liveability of a
place like Sydney given its size, together with the diverse range
of entertainment and cultural pursuits relatively on-hand. There
still aren't many places like it.
Was it an easy decision to select a final 11 songs for the
album? Most of the songs had selected themselves by the
time I came to record. I struggled with whether I need a
'theme' or something to guide the selection, but ended up not
worrying, and just going with the songs that I felt hung
together well musically. And er ... I wasn't really lost for a
theme in the end either!!
I'm such a perfectionist that I'm not sure I'd ever be happy with
a final recording. Is it hard for you? Ha! It's torture. The mixed
blessing of digital recording means never really having to
finish till you make yourself. I enjoyed the indulgence this time
but there's a lot to be said for speed too!
What sort of stuff do you listen to at home? Anything really,
though I have to remind myself to put something on a lot of the
time -- being my work as well. Fiona Apple, PJ Harvey, Beck,
chilled groove stuff if I want wall paper, usually organic/real
sounds as they make me feel at home.
I loved hearing you perform with a band, will you be taking
them on the road? Yes, when I can, they're a beautiful bunch
of musicians. I'll also do tours in a smaller format which is
easier to budget for.
My favourite song on the album is 'Wet Wood.' How did it
come about? "I took the coast way to Boundary Street today."
That's how it came about, and that's when most of it was written
-- when I got back from the walk. The longish walk back to my
place from Clovelly is to be thanked for the fact that the idea
and some of the melody were well-enough formed for me to
want to grab the guitar immediately! The counter melody/lyric

at the end of the song came over a year later though ... now
there's a long walk!
Which of the 11 tracks is closest to your heart? I'd say 'Wet
Wood' or 'All I Want'. The reason is really that both these
songs were inspired by my own reality at the time of initial
writing, they kind of 'had' to be written, or at least started at
that time, so there's an emotional impetus to them. Purely
musically though, I'd say 'Desire' is closest to my heart.
Favourite way to spend a Sunday? Either in the sun
somewhere warm and relaxed, goofing around with friends
... or going to the movies if the weather is crap and the
movie is fab!
