Kate from Darlinghurst and her partner Neroli will be
vamping it up. "I think [porn] being the theme will allow the
dykes out there to become something they are usually not; to
create a new persona for themselves and dress differently than
they usually do when going out", says Kate. Both agree that
porn is playful and shouldn't be taken too seriously and that
options for dressing up are limitless.
Letting your alter ego run riot is central to Sleaze's imagery
this year. The poster depicts three boys and two girls clad in
little more than their skin, and are almost statuesque in their
abode of decadence. "It's like looking in on a porn film set; like
we've captured some ultra sexy moment", says Alice Gluszyk a
designer from Propeller Graphics who is the creative force
behind the ad campaign. "We considered seventies retro porn,
but it's tacky and just not glamorous enough". She says it was
difficult to capture everybody's idea of what is sexy and what
they consider to be porn. The poster is of people "you see
yourself wanting to be or have sex with or party with; it puts
them across as characters rather than statements". While the
campaign drapes itself over the leather ottoman, languid and
sultry, there is also a subtle thrust at the funnier side of it all.
Suzanne Duffy, co-chair of NMG marketing, agrees that
there is a tongue in cheek-ness to it all. "We are almost poking
fun at porn and we aren't making a political statement at all,
we're being a bit cliché; ultimately it is a party we are
promoting". She adds that NMG received "quite a lot of
feedback" from the lesbian community before the final poster
was decided on. Seldom does the lesbian community have an
opportunity to offer feedback about what they think is sexy,
simply because there is very little out there to consider.
There is an evident lack of porn aimed at the lesbian market.
"There's a big difference between what is out there and what
people really want to see", says Alice Gluszyk. She echoes the
sentiments of Annabel who thinks that a large percentage of all
'lesbian porn' is "women with long nails playing out the
heterosexual male fantasy, and the women are almost always in
it to pleasure the man".
Steph Sands, co-chair of NMG, says that while there is a
definite sense of freedom in porn "most lesbian porn is pretty
crappy and not made for a lesbian audience. I'd like to see more
porn for lesbians made by lesbians".
There seems to be a consensus on this subject within the
lesbian community and a market for any entrepreneurial
women out there. Of the little lesbian porn that is made by
women for women, a series called 'San Francisco Lesbians'
for example, the quality is questionable, and you can't help
but cry out -- not in ecstasy but in embarrassment and
sympathy for your own kind. So for the Sydney lesbian
community this year's Sleaze Ball will be an extra special one.
The chick called porn will have trimmed fingernails; her
genuine moans of enjoyment will drown out the forced
whimpers of simulated sex, and her movements won't need
to be choreographed; she will make porn hers ... Maybe
someone should take a video camera.
