Home' LOTL : May 2004 Contents Melissa had the okay from the family and even appeared
with a few leftover members of Janis' band, Big Brother
and the Holding Company just to try the role on for size.
Then, when the Hollywood big boys decided that Melissa
didn't have enough clout as a movie star, the project was off.
Then it was on again, only this time the role was going to Lili
Taylor (Six Feet Under and Gaudi Afternoon.) That project
went nowhere and then I told you that Rene Zelwegger, fresh
from her Oscar win in Chicago was set to star, now that
musicals are popular again. And since Zelwegger proved she
could sing by holding down the lead in a musical.
Well, hold on because there's now a fight under way to play
the title role. From out of nowhere, singer Pink has just been
signed for a new version of the film to be directed by Penelope
Spheeris (Wayne's World), and due to be released next year.
Spheeris hopes to begin filming The Gospel According to Janis
in the fall, which could be bad news for Zellweger, who wants
to produce and star in her own Joplin flick, Piece of My Heart.
However, since Zellweger is already committed to start filming
next month on the film Cinderella Man with Russell Crowe, it
would seem that Pink may just beat her to the punch.
Hollywood isn't likely to give the green light to two movies
about the same subject, which means that whoever can get their
movie going first will get to take home the title role.
Since Pink's calendar is free and clear, that would make her
the one who gets to bring the boozy, blowzy, Joplin to the big
screen. Not so fast though. Some are saying that Zelwegger has
enough Hollywood star power to halt production on Pink's
version -- or at least to knock her out of it. Some are speculating
that Renee may be able to steal Spheeris for her own director
and then get Pink to simply contribute a few songs to the
soundtrack. Who'll win a piece of the box office? Guess we'll
have to wait and see. Meanwhile, Melissa Etheridge must be
having a good laugh at both of them.
Okay, since we're talking about old news which is now
good news, which television star from Mad About You is
causing a stir playing the hot lesbian love interest in the hot new
lesbian series The L Word? That would be none other than
Anne Ramsay, who played Helen Hunt's spacey sister.
Although Ramsay never made a big coming out statement, it
was well known in Hollywood that Ramsay was a dyke. And
now here she is, rolling around on screen, getting down and
naked. Although the show has had every criticism possible
thrown at it by the lesbian community, the series is considered
to be a smash hit and was renewed for a second season faster
than any other show in the network's history. Actresses are
signing up right and left to get a chance at appearing on this
Sapphic soap opera. So far we've seen Anne Archer, Lolita
Davidovich, Kelly Lynch, and Rosanna Arquette and for the
second season, the producers have announced they are
desperate to get Angelina Jolie. Yeah, aren't we all?
And on network television, look for the issue of gay
marriage and gay rights to come front on centre on the medical
drama ER. I don't want to spoil anything for you so I'm just
going to say that although they've been downplaying the
lesbian storyline for a while, actress Laura Innes, as doctor
Kerry Weaver, is about to turn in a bravura performance. That's
about all I can say right now.
And finally, don't tell anyone, but now that Whitney
Houston is in rehab, the old lesbian rumours are once again
buzzing around Hollywood. Shh!!
