Located at the top of a mountain, the crest of which is
dotted with self-contained luxury lodges, Eaglereach is an
outdoor girl's paradise. Here the natural beauty of the
Australian bush surrounds you. Majestic gum trees and
pockets of lush rainforest segue to breathtaking views of the
green Hunter Valley spread out far below, providing the
perfect backdrop to your wilderness escape.
At Eaglereach, nature comes first. But everything is
better for this r ule. Families of grey kangaroos populate the
resort and they stand and greet you as you pass by. When
barbecuing on your private deck, pairs of kookaburras may
join you, hoping for a morsel of meat. On your way to
breakfast you may just come across a baby wallaroo and its
mother snacking on green grass shoots, and at night the
leaves and twigs outside your lodge crackle with the feet of
marsupials going about their nocturnal business. A hit of
tennis or swim in the pool is usually applauded by a gentle
chorus of birdsong, and wandering through the labyrinth of
walking trails may find you in the company of many
different species of friendly fauna.
The wildlife is so plentiful that the speed limit is 20km,
and there are no trail bikes or daytrippers permitted in the
resort. These policies have helped preser ve and nurture
Eaglereach's environment, which has flourished in its ten-
AUTUMN IS THE PERFECT TIME TO PLAN AN
ESCAPE TO THE HUNTER VALLEY, AND
LUXURY ECO-RESORT EAGLEREACH HAS
PLENTY ON OFFER. BY MERRYN JOHNS.
A WOMAN'S TOUCH
But such eco-sense doesn't mean a girl can't enjoy a bit of
pampering. Firstly, the rain water supply, unlimited fresh air and
outdoor heated spas do wonders for your skin. Secondly,
Eaglereach now has its own beauty treatments onsite. In
celebration of its anniversary, Eaglereach has added the Lowanna
Wellbeing Centre to its impressive list of facilities and activities.
"Lowanna", from the aboriginal meaning "a place of
beauty" lives up to its name on many levels. In its tranquil bush
setting, Lowanna offers a soothing and spiritual environment
in which you can choose from an extensive range of quality
treatments. Whether you just need to de-stress or simply want
to be seriously pampered, the ladies at Lowanna are skilled and
attentive and will restore your sense of equilibrium.
Being a former tomboy and essentially bookish girl, I'm
a complete stranger to facials and beauty treatments of most
kinds. But Julie at Lowanna has me converted. Her astute
knowledge of Australian skin products and beauty
procedures has led her to source only the best preparations
for her wellbeing centre. I was lucky enough to sample
treatments which included a cleansing oil, exfoliation, scrub
and mango mask, all featuring the excellent locally-produced,
totally natural Skin Juice range (www.skinjuice.com.au). I was
also thrilled to receive a soothing face, hand and foot
massage from Julie's magic fingers -- all part of the ser vice!
Couples are encouraged to enjoy a range of treatments
together which also include full massages, sauna treatments,
and hydrotherapy. Pedicures, manicures, nail treatments and
enhancements, waxing, makeup and piercing are also
available. Julie was especially excited about the Lithos
Therapy, which utilises heated and chilled rocks to relax and
soothe muscles while stimulating the body and mind, and
showed me the high-tech "cocoon" in which an invigorating
Indian Milk Bath can be enjoyed. Perhaps next time.
When my treatment was over Julie was happy to offer me
a glass of wine and a chat about the scrumptious products
that she used, all of which are available for purchase. After
years of trial and error with skin care products, I think I may
just have found the perfect, reasonably priced option.
ON YOUR WAY TO BREAKFAST YOU MAY JUST COME
ACROSS A BABY WALLAROO AND ITS MOTHER
SNACKING ON GREEN GRASS SHOOTS, AND AT
NIGHT THE LEAVES AND TWIGS OUTSIDE YOUR LODGE
CRACKLE WITH THE FEET OF MARSUPIALS GOING
ABOUT THEIR NOCTURNAL BUSINESS.
BEING A FORMER TOMBOY AND ESSENTIALLY
BOOKISH GIRL, I'M A COMPLETE STRANGER TO
FACIALS AND BEAUTY TREATMENTS OF MOST KINDS.
