Why did you enter LOTL’s
Partly because I thought it
would be a bit of a laugh,
and partly because I was at
my wit’s end trying to find
a decent way of meeting a
woman that didn’t involve
trashy drunken nights
out, internet dating or ‘a
scene’. I just didn’t really
fit into any of the existing
communities, so figured
I’d try something new.
Were you surprised by the response to your profile? Why do you think you
appealed to the LOTL readership?
I am more surprised by this than anyone else. I actually couldn’t believe what I
was reading. I guess what appealed to the readership was authenticity, having
a bit of a laugh at myself and being a big dork with my poem, ha! I honestly
couldn’t say for sure. I’m pretty lucky, maybe that has something to do with it?
How would you describe yourself?
Small-footed, sunny-eyed, well-travelled, 5-year old’s laugh, most comfortable
nude or covered in paint, or both! I am fond of the exquisite struggle in life. Artist
on canvas, singer on stave, philosopher on a starry night. A completely useless
romantic. The most important thing in my life is to surround myself with peace,
love and art – fortunately these things I find in my group of closest friends.
What do you think are your best/ worst qualities?
Best – The ability to laugh at life and (most) everything it throws at me. I don’t
take myself too seriously.
Worst – I break things, because I’m a klutz. Guilty of snoring also.
Are you a confirmed bachelorette – do you like being single or would you
like to have a girlfriend?
Loving singledom! The best thing has been getting my head together in terms
of self-sufficiency, emotional independence, travel, and the freedom to grow
selfishly. I am at a point now, where I believe I am ready to share my life again,
and I am sufficiently strong enough to hold my space, my energy, my emotions.
Plus, who doesn’t love love?
What are you looking for in a partner?
A creative. A dreamer. A lover. Someone who believes in things beyond pomp,
ego, TV, beer and self-destruction. Those are my only criteria.
What’s your idea of the perfect date?
Sunset at a private beach, guitar and drumbeat, poetry and stars, firetwirling,
romance, dancing, kisses, flying time.
Do you believe in love?
Absolutely. I also believe equally in self-love and until your own self-love has
been filled up, you cannot effectively grow love for another. In my experience, it
always sours, and you find yourself filling your own bowl from someone else’s
well of energy.
What’s your advice to other single girls looking for love?
I’m not sure I have any. I am in the same position. But a piece of advice my
brother gave me a million years ago was this, ‘Just take care of you. Do what
you love to do. Feel incredible about your life. Make every day amazing. Get
involved, get fit, get healthy and when all your ducks are in a row, someone will
cross your path who happens to match your best self. That is the love that you
deserve’. He lived this philosophy on love by example and I try to do the same.
Your favourite way to spend a lazy Sunday?
Pack up four cars of friends, instruments, food and towels and head to
the beach. Play, swim, eat, drink be merry, etc. Stay well past sunset,
pull out the fire-toys, many, many group hugs and cuddle puddles.
A shared dinner. Honest laughter. Feeling like the sun made an appearance just
for you. That’s my favourite Sunday.
The best thing bout being a lesbian is... unlimited orgasms and all-night
Seriously though, obviously the best thing about being a lesbian is loving
women, openly, freely, honestly.
What does winning the title of LOTL’s BOY mean to you?
Well, the timing of this whole thing has been impeccable. The day after I had an
awful argument with someone close to me on homosexuality, I was announced
as a finalist. And the day after another homophobic-inspired blow-up, I was
announced as the winner. So on each occasion, I have taken it as a small
sign that despite the negative energy I may receive in one small area of my
life, it is overwhelmingly positive in another area. Though this is just a small
competition, the timing has been perfect and has brought a smile to my face
exactly when I needed it.
We get up close and personal with our Bachelorette
of the Year (BOY) winner – Jessie Ray
