Home' LOTL : June 12 Contents Did you come from a theatrical family?
No, I come from an outdoorsy, climbing, skiing,
kayaking family. I did go to the ballet a few times
though. My mum had a patient who was a clown, so
we all learnt to unicycle.
What’s your earliest circus memory?
Riding an elephant around the ring as a five year-old.
Moscow Circus: Flying Cranes, Flying Trapeze
First job in the biz?
Cycle Messenger World Championships in San
Francisco in 1996. (I had lots of shows before that, but
this was the first official paid gig.)
Where did your passion for circus stem?
I love working with people – them and their bodies
with all the possibilities and limitations. Exposing/
telling stories physically. It’s all about finding solutions
and using gear in odd ways – rather than hard
rules and competition. Circus satisfies my drive and
discipline and collaborative spirit.
How would you describe your act to the uninitiated?
A big four metre swing – using the centrifugal and
pendular forces to increase the time of weightlessness
and then performing pirouettes and release moves at
that moment. In Flying Trapeze: listening and being
ready for my mates flying across to me.
What’s your creative process when developing a
new act for the show? What challenges do you face
Physical skill training with fellow artists to establish
trust and a common language, then let things steep
Where do you draw inspiration for your work? Are

Everyone I work with and those below:
Sharon Gruenert – my training and performing partner
and production biz partner for my show John Henry
Presents. Why? She knows I’ll still be circusing for a
good while yet and she won’t let me pretend otherwise.
She gets right into the meat of blocking an act. Sharon
has two kids and is very clear on boundaries.
Terry Cavaretta – first female flyer to perform a triple
Deb Batton – independent artist, physical performer
and director. Still clowning and being silly physically
within her safe limits at 53.
Not Yet It’s Difficult (company) – their rigorous
process to develop physical communication between
performers and their audience.
acrobat (company) – circus from Albury. Speaking
their truths ironically with their well-trained skills.
Tony Rooke (National Circus Festival) – bringing
together a great community/industry and providing
space for all levels and quirks to shine in a sustainable
What can the punters expect to see at this Circus Oz
show? How would you describe the new show From
the Ground Up?
A bunch of skilled artists working together and
individually to establish connections across class,
gender and ethnicity.
Why should we go and see From the Ground Up?
The tent is special! The riggers rock. Champion female
air guitarist. Amazing foot juggling and tumbling.
