Home' LOTL : June 12 Contents When Margie Cummins entered camp
Biggest Loser she tipped the scales
at 159 kilos. So it's hard to imagine
that this feisty out and proud lesbian was ever a t
and healthy athlete. Yet Brissie-based Cummins,
who went on to win the Network Ten show a er
dropping a massive 85.9 kg (or 46 % of her body
weight) came from a sporty family and was a state
rep in high school.
"My father was a champion bike rider and surf
life saver, my mother was an amazing tennis player,
all my brothers and sisters were very sporty and
represented their states in various sports. Health
and tness played a huge part in my life growing
up. I represented my school, both primary and sec-
ondary, in state rep sport. Later in life I represented
my state and country in various sports."
Indeed Cummins was a picture of health until
she went into business, opening a restaurant. "It
wasn't until I opened up my rst restaurant that
my eating became a problem," she admits. "Work-
ing late nights and not exercising , plus the stress of
being a small business owner de nitely contributed
to my 50 odd kilo weight gain in just one year."
Margie attributes much of her weight gain to
stress and her change in lifestyle. As an owner/op-
erator of a small business the once t state champ
found she had little time to do the things she loved.
"I stopped doing things that were important to
me, such as sur ng, running and outrigging and
instead chose a path that had many short cuts.
What I assumed at the time was best for me, wasn't.
Sometimes you become so obsessed in achieving
greatness in your work life, the other part of your
life such as health and happiness doesn't even rate
Now she understands how detrimental this at-
titude with its lack of work life balance was. "It was
silly, so silly. Because if you don't have your health
and you aren't happy -- having a successful career
Cummins admits that it wasn't until she woke
up one morning and "acknowledged that I had
become someone I didn't want to be" that she re-
alised she had developed a weight problem. " ere
wasn't a part of me that loved myself," she says. "I
felt bitter and depressed. How could I have done
this to myself ? So two days later I applied for the
Biggest Loser. And the rest they say is history..."
e audition process was lengthy, but encour-
aged by friends and former Biggest Loser contest-
ant, Sharif Deen, Cummins stuck to her guns and
three months later she was accepted into e Big-
Asked what advice she would give to someone
struggling with their weight and Cummins answer
"I think it's important to understand what con-
tributed to your weight gain. is is where you
need to be honest with yourself. If you have friends
who are straight shooters, go and ask them for
their opinion. Next I would go to your Doctor. Get
all the tests done to rule out any medical complica-
tion that maybe contributing to your weight gain.
Once you have the all clear, go and grab Michelle
Bridges cook book, losing the last 5kg! I used that
in the house. Also grab yourself a calorie counter
book! Trust me, if you are consuming too many
calories you shouldn't bother exercising as weight
loss success is 80% of what we EAT! Plan your
week in advance. Personally I would decline o ers
from friends to go out for at least 3-4 weeks! Temp-
tation will be your down fall! I would go and grab
a good pair of runners (go to athletes foot). You
don't need a gym. Hit the hills!!!! Get a heart rate
monitor and record how many cals you are burn-
ing!!! Also keep a food diary. Surround yourself
with positive people and remove anyone who will
be a distraction. Your real mates will be encourag-
ing you all the way. Don't be afraid to ick the neg-
ative ones. Remember this is about you and what's
best for you. e hardest part is putting your shoes
on! But also remember that this will be very hard,
make no mistakes... But hey just do it! If I can do
it, anyone can!
