Katie and Sharon Fox tie the knot.
When former police officers Katie and Sharon Fox met on the
job, they instantly hit it off. After a couple of years, friendship
bloomed into love and the duo became partners. Tog ether now for
nine years, the pair recently made the journe y to Canada so they
could leg ally declare their love for one another. While the Austral-
ian federal government is still to acknowldge the legality of their
union - the pair hope for a day when marriag e equality is for all.
Why did you decide to go to Canada to tie the knot?
It was important to us to get married in a country that leg ally re c-
og nised our marriag e.
Where do you weigh in on the marriage equality debate? What do you
say to the haters?
I think it’s ridiculous that marriag e equality is a debate. We
should have equal rights. We live in a secular country and marriage
is a civil right, not a religious one. I think it’s ridiculous that it hasn’t
been rectified before now. I ’d say live and let live to the haters.
The best thing about being married?
Making that commitment to each other and being able to intro-
duce my par tner as “my wife”.
When did you know she was ‘the one’?
We both kne w ver y early on. Probably at the three month mark,
we knew it was right.
Highlight of the ceremony/day?
The whole day was a highlight, and having eight of our closest
friends and family make the hug e effort to come over and celebrate
with us was ver y special.
What would you say in favour of Marriage Equality to our PM Julia
Gillard if you were to meet her?
I think I’d ask why not and work backwards from there. Australia
isn’t going to fall apar t if same sex marriag e is leg al. It is legal in a
number of other countries and they haven’t cr umbled as a result.
But it would make such a difference to the lives of same sex attracted
couples who do want to get married and have equal, legal recogni-
tion of their relationship and the benefits that flow on as a result.
