Home' LOTL : Mar 12 Contents Jacqui Cunningham aka DJ Cunningpants has always had
an appreciation for music. Indeed she describes music as "a
way of life", which is understandable when you consider she
comes from a family of musicians.
"I started piano lessons from the age of six and have taught my-
self pretty much every instrument I could get my greasy mits on
since then. My Mum is a music teacher so there was always a huge
emphasis on music growing up."
Her earliest musical memory is when she and her mum used to
sing together. "She would sing a tune and I would try to copy it,"
recalls Jacqui. "[ inking about it] makes me feel all warm and
Despite being surrounded by music and possessing a natural af-
nity, Jacqui says she never really planned for a career in the music
biz, "it sort of just happened. But I always try to put all my energy
into doing the things I love."
Since commencing her career as a DJ, Jacqui has picked up
quite a following in the LGBT scene and played with a number
of big name DJs, yet says her best gig is still probably her rst.
"My rst DJ gig was de nitely one of my best. It was at my very

the club was packed. I remember having the best time and playing
all my favourite songs at the time -- large celebra-
tions were had a er that gig."
Asked to describer her DJ style, Jacqui insists
that she "likes to mix it up a lot.
"I play at a really diverse group of clubs
around Australia," she says. "So I always have a
large collection of music with me when I play.
Sometimes I'll drop ve or six di erent music
genres all in one set. I love to please a crowd."
So what gets her creative juices owing? Jac-
qui's answer is simple. "I try to view music for
what it is and try not to over analyse it, or make
it something it's not. I love listening to music
and letting it take over. I like to think people see
me enjoying the music, which inspires them to
do the same. is is really important to me."
Which begs the question, what kind of music
"I'm inspired by so much music, but my musi-
cal taste is constantly changing. I love taking a
crowd by surprise."
Jacqui confesses that she is "stupidly excited"
to be playing the Mardi Gras party. Saying that
"playing to a massive crowd of Mardi Gras par-
tygoers" will be her highlight. Which leaves the
all important question -- what's her all-time fa-
vourite party anthem?
Jacqui's lightning response: "Madonna --
