A slice of Italy
Caffe Sicilia, an authentic Italian cafe, has joined
the ranks of crowd-pleasers nestled amongst
Crown St’s foodie district. By Cec Busby
Surry Hills’ strip offers a range of restaurants dishing uptastesensations for
even the most jaded palate. The latest addition to the bustling restaurant
arena is Caffe Sicilia, an authentic old school style cuccina, cafe and pasteria that
delivers sumptuous dishes that smack of old world charm.
The decor is 1940s inspired. Wooden tables gleam, marble countertops
shine and the waiters with their white shirts and long skinny ties evoke a sense
of another time and place. Walls are adorned with photos of Italian stars a la
Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren – sipping delicately on their short blacks
– which instantly inspires a sense of nostalgia.
The menu reflects the same taste for years gone by; it’s peppered with
authentic Italian dishes and gorgeous produce. From the mozzarella to the vine
ripened tomatoes and the rich creamy cassata – no expense has been spared to
ensure the flavours of Sicily have been achieved.
With so much great food on the menu we opt to let our waiter make our
selections and are presented with a sumptuous feast. After plying us with some
delicious Sicilian olives and sourdough bread with a light fruity olive oil to
accompany it, he suggests some antipasto specialties that prove delicious. The
Burrata Pugliese arrives on the table – the cheese which is similar to Buffalo
mozzarella only creamier – is wrapped in a blanket of the finest Prosciutto
then accompanied by cherry tomatoes bathed in dose of oil and enriched by
capers and basil for a flavour burst. Absolutely delicious! We follow this up with
the Pane Cunzato, a grilled focaccia with tomato, buffalo mozzarella, tuna,
eggplant and baked ricotta – which is so more-ish we almost want to order
seconds but know that we can’t or we’ll have no room for our mains.
Today we are in luck, the special is lasagne – and it’s just like Mamma used to
make – the lasagne sheets have just a hint of bite and the meat filling is rich – the
tomato adding just the right blend of sweetness and acidity to cut through. A
rucolo salad of rocket, sundried tomato, goats cheese and orange and almond is
the perfect accompaniment.
Sweet toothes aren’t forgotten either. Our waiter finishes our meal with a trio
of dishes that would please even the most ardent of dessert lovers. A traditional
Sicilian Cassata, Cannoli and a decadent strawberry tart. While Caffe Sicilia is
famous for its cannoli and the strawberry tart is sublime, it is the Cassata that
really steals our hearts – this baked ricotta cake is an absolute delight from first
to last bite!

The Word of Mouth campaign
acknowledges pleasure as a significant
motivating factor in drug use and body
modification practices and focuses on that in
offering realistic and practical harm reduction
strategies to the SSAW and lesbian communities
via a ‘community-conne ctedness’ framework.
‘Word of Mouth’ – and the ACON drug and
alcohol response generally is consistent with the
principle of harm reduction, a policy approach
that the Australian and state governments have
maintained for over 25 years.
The ‘ Word of Mouth’ campaign was launched
in December 2011 via YouTube and a Facebook
page. It incorporates five eng aging promotional
posters and postcard resources, which feature
community members sharing experiences and
knowledge on safer drug use practices, safer party
play and advice on ser vices that understand the
ne eds of SSAW, lesbians and their families.
The YouTube channel is the primar y
communication focus for the campaign and it
provides detailed education and information on
harm re duction, dr ug treatment and support.
The website includes campaign imag es and
e ducational videos as well as providing an
interactive space for viewers to post questions
regarding drug use and treatment.
ACON’s Manager of HIV/Sexual Health
Programs, Siri May, says that acknowledging
desire and pleasure for women who use drug s
or eng ag e in play is fundamentally important to
ensuring effective health promotion in this space.
“This proje ct speaks to women about the reality
of their lives and provides health information

The website provides a platform to post
questions regarding drug use, party play, body
modification and treatment, as well as the
opportunity to make your own videos. The video
messag es include helpful tips that women may
have about treatment options and reducing drug-
related harm .
As well as contributing to the YouTube website
- by submitting a video or adding your own posts
on how to ke ep life in a healthy balance - there’s
also the opportunity to become a friend of the
campaign on Facebook and to join with other
SSAW and lesbians and health ser vice providers
in strengthening the safety and well being of the
SSAW and lesbian community.
