Fans should throw R adox, not roses when
they see Lauren Allison perform. Playing
for “eight or so” bands can take its toll,
but she insists it’s worth it.
“I always wanted to play the drums. When I
was in year 10, I found Jack, this awesome 75 yr
old, 5ft tall jazz cat from New York . He taught
me ever ything I know.”
At 26, Lauren now teaches 11 students of
“Unfortunately, Jack passed away two years
ago. But even now, I’ll be teaching and something
he taught me will come back and I’ll re-learn it,
so I’m still learning from him by teaching other
Lauren plays for a diverse mix of musicians,
from indie rock, to ja zz, cabaret, covers bands and
ever yone in between. I asked whether the dream
was to hit the big time ; become the next Hannah
“I couldn’t imagine anything worse than playing
with one famous band,” she replies emphatically.
“I love diversity. I want to be 80 and playing in a
café in Glebe.
“It’s not easy,” she said, “but I am lucky to have
an amazing girlfriend, who is really supportive.”
Lauren missed her so much when on tour that she
hand wrote poems to send home to her lady.
“Going to Adelaide Fringe Festival with Lady
Sings it Better was awesome ; it was my first
big group tour.” Lauren explains. “But to me,
playing at a shitty pub in St Mar ys and playing at
Midsumma or the Adelaide Fring e, is the same,
whether you have 5 or 5,000 people.”
What’s it like, spending all that time playing
behind sing ers’ arses ?
“I love it!” – a quick reply with a cheeky glint
in her eye.
“In some way you’re the silent achiever. I don’t
want to be centre stag e. I love sitting up the back
and seeing the inner working s of the music.”
Lauren has 4 drum kits, 8 congas, 12 snare
drums, 8 guitars, a cello, a couple of violins that
don’t work and plans to buy a piano. She’s going to
need it all with the year she has planned.

UK lesbian artists band together against
A group of the UK’s leading lesbian artists
got together at Dean Street Studios in Soho,
London to record a song which will help raise
awareness and money for charities that work to
combat homophobic bullying in young people.
The song, It Does Get Better will be available as
a digital download in February.
“We are all so very happy with the single, the
weekend in the studio couldn’t have been
any better, it was an emotional yet really fun
weekend with everyone working together,”
says Georgey Payne.
The L Project is gathering growing support from
both gay and straight communities across the
UK and beyond. “The enthusiasm is amazing!”
says Georgey Payne, creator of the L Project,
and singer-songwriter for UK lesbian band
Greymatter. “We’re finding that most people
know of, or have been affected by this issue,
and just want to join in and help in whatever
way they can.”
