Home' LOTL : Jan 12 Contents Gasworks Arts Park’s Premier visual art exhibition, The Decision is
Yours, showcases Indigenous artist Rynelle Walker’s unique fusion of
one of our most ancient cultural traditions with a glorious contemporary
With no formal training, the young artist’s striking work has been shown in a
number of group exhibitions, and is now held in both corporate and private
collections in Australia. Not a bad effort for a woman whose passion for
painting kicked in after a twelve month stint working in the Northern Territory.
A perfect fit for Midsumma 2012, Rynelle’s dynamic work celebrates the
strength of women and the power of mother earth, while the essence of
beauty, struggles and strengths are encapsulated through her exceptional use
of colour and intricate dot patterns. While many of us would avoid all forms
of struggle and negativity, Rynelle not only embraces the challenges that life
feeds us, but uses them as a source of inspiration; transforming them into
spectacular and captivating artworks.
“Indigenous art is telling a story and that’s what I’m trying to do with my
work,” Rynelle explains. “Life takes us all on a journey; it’s all about struggles
and obstacles along the way and taking different directions can lead you to
other struggles and obstacles. But positives and negatives are needed in life.
I think my work reflects that.”
The Decision is Yours will be on display at Gasworks Arts Park from Jan
17 – Feb 15. See gasworks.org.au for more details.
