Renowned US writer and performer Kimberly
Dark has been inspiring audiences across North
America and Europe for more than ten years.
Now she’s finally coming to Austra lia, bringing
her fantastic show Dykeotomy to Adelaide’s Feast
Festival in November.
A writer, mother, performer and professor,
Kimberly is the author of five award-winning solo
performance scripts and her poetry and prose have
appeared in many publications across America .
Dark’s shows, including Dykeotomy, have twice
been named on LOTL’s sister magazine Cur ve’s
top -ten performances of the year and in 2010,
Campus Pride named her as one of 25 ‘Best of the
Best’ speakers and performers on colleg e campuses.
Using humour and intimac y she eng ages her
audiences with tantalising topics. Dykeotomy is
a solo performance for “ever yone who has gender
examined or not.” A comic- erotic-drama for
adult audiences only, Dark described Dykeotomy
as “a f unny, touching and sexy game of gender
In Dykeotomy, Dark explores modern gender
confusion from the perspective of the gender-
normative female lover, asking questions like
“ What does sexual orientation mean when gender
shifts? What did it ever mean in the context of
masculine lives in female-sexed bodies ?”
Her hilarious interactions with the
audience reg arding her confusion with dating
are interspersed with her signature po etic
stories – tightly crafted, highly moving social
In one stor y, Dark relays the tale of two
friends having two hysterectomies – one
by choice, one from illness. Dark leads the
audience to question the role of biolog y in
creating happiness – both in theor y and in
practice. Other stories explore the foibles
of strap-on sex, topping and bottoming
and how sex and theor y are not always
discussed in different venues. Audiences
will question their relationships to biolog y, culture
and sex – and get turned on in the pro cess !
A practicing sociologist, Dark transforms
her controversial views on g ender and female
sexuality into an intimate, fluid exchang e of ideas
and personal adventures. She is an extraordinar y
performance ar tist whose unique blend of
poetry and ‘stand-up stor y telling ’ has impressed
audiences around the world.
Dark loves to speak and perform “just about
anywhere an audience loves a well-
told delicious stor y, from fancy theatres and
esteemed universities right through to fabulous
