“ What isn’t awesome about field hockey?”
Susan Thomson, women’s officer for the Bent-
stix Gay & Lesbian Field Hockey Club, asks
me. Then she says, “It’s a fast, fun game but it
feels kind of fierce and you’re surrounded by
hot, sweaty girls.” Sounds good! Where do we
Bentstix, Sydney ’s answer to those field hock-
ey ambitions of yours, is a commun ity-based
group constantly recruiting new players that
is looking for a girl like you to join their team.
Bentstix was in Wellington earlier this year at
the Asia-Pacific Outgames, coming away with
gold in both the women’s and men’s competi-
tions. “I think we all wish that week would’ve
lasted forever,” Susan says.
When the team isn’t competing they’re hold-
ing practices, games and social events. It’s an
active community that enjoys hanging out to -
gether. Bentstix was established in 1996 and
has since grown to become the world’s largest
and most successful LGBT hockey club, with
over 70 active members.
What has contributed to the growth of the team?
I think the success has really been due to
the org anisational effort put in by many of the
players over time and to the social and friendly
nature of the club. One thing I noticed when I
joined back in 2009, ne ver having e ven played
hockey before, was how welcome I felt. Players
are happy to lend out spare sticks to new players
and ver y willing to teach, without applying any
pressure to perform.
What are the experience levels of most of your
The experience level really varies, some people
having been playing since they were kids and
play at a division one standard and others - like
me - take up hockey when they become a part of
Bentstix. No-one really minds what level ever y-
one else is at, it’s not about that, it’s about doing
something you love to do with people whom
you have something in common. Not that we
don’t enjoy winning too!
What is the process of joining the team?
Simple! Anyone interested in finding out
more about Bentstix can check out our website
at bentstix.com.au and can contact us through
the site. We also have a stall annually at Fair
Day. We welcome new players of any skill level.
There are a few e vents coming up over the next
few months so now is a great time to get in touch.
What other events is Bentstix involved with?
From October to December of each year we
also play in a couple of local summer comps
in Sydne y’s inner west. We also plan to enter
our first e ver women’s team into the reg ular
winter season in Sydney’s Eastern Districts
comp in 2012. Bentstix also plays host to the
annual Pink Hockey Day, which is around Fair
Day weekend. After our wins in Wellington
we’re really pumped to compete in the World
Outgames in Antwerp ’13. We are looking to
recruit new players for any or all of these events.
Summer hockey is par ticular favourite among st
club members and is a great way to get involved
with the club and se e just what we’re about.
