Bush Lemons, the Blue Mountains lesbian bushwalking group,
has entere d another team (its fifth conse cutive entry) in this year ’s
100km Oxfam Trailwalker. The event is to be held on Aug ust 26-
28 and the team will walk from Brooklyn to Mosman in under 48 hours.
The four women, Sally Wride, Jennifer Lennon, Christine Thompson and
Sharron Car ter, have been training for months and are proud of the effort
they have put in so far. They have bonded well during training often sharing
stories along the way. Their training regime includes walking the Trailwalker
route as well as a variety of walks in their own backyard, the beautiful Blue
Mountains. None of them expects that Trailwalker will be a ‘walk in the
park’ but they do anticipate it being a lot of fun. Along the way, they will
battle exhaustion, sleep deprivation, blisters, aches and pains, cramping and
the darkness of night. It’s not easy negotiating a rocky path at midnight but
the uphill is always a lot less strenuous when you can’t see the top! The hours
betwe en midnight and sunrise are considered by some to be the hardest
because your body just wants to sleep.
The Bush Lemons depend on their support crew, Jocelyn, Liz and Ang ela
to help get them over the finish line by providing much ne eded pep talks,
hot drinks, warm food, first aid, dry clothing and the all-important massag e,
at the rest stops along the way.
Although walking 100kms in 48 hours might sound daunting , equally
challenging for the team is the raising of this year’s target of $7,000. The Bush
Lemons had a re cent garage sale and dinner where they raised a substantial
sum and they have re ceived much in the way of online donations. The Bush
Lemons still have a way to g o to reach their target and are g rateful for the
lesbian community’s continuing support. “Year after year we are thankful to
the women, their families and friends who support us” they said.
Bush Lemons is a lesbian walking group that walks usually 2-3 times a month,
var ying distances and grades primarily in the Blue Mountains. Contact Jocelyn
at email@example.com if you would like to go on the email list.
The Trailwalker event raises money for Oxfam’s international social justice
programs. Bush Lemons is committed to raising a minimum of $7,000.
All donations to Oxfam are appreciated and should you wish to donate
