Moscow violence scorned
Gay actor Ian McKellen has condemned the vio-
lence and arrests at the recent Moscow Pride, and
blamed the city’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin.
The event was given permission to go ahead,
but that was rescinded at the eleventh hour,
sparking violent protests and arrests as the
event continued regardless.
“The mayor of Moscow is a coward. Rather than
face the fact that Muscovite gays and lesbians
should be valued on a par with their straight peers,
he panders to the right wing. He throws them some
red meat, some gays, to gnaw on,” McKellen said.
Last year, the European Court of Human Rights
ruled that Russia’s ban of Moscow Pride in 2006,
2007 and 2008 breached the European Convention
on Human Rights, of which Russia is a singatory.
The protest, swelled by neo-Nazis, has gone viral,
with vidoes and eye witness statements and videos
posted onto YouTube.
More support for Marriage
The Rabbinic Council of Progressive Rabbis
has publicly supported marriage equality under
Australian law. In a statement the council said:
“Judaism teaches that all human beings are cre-
ated betzelem Elohim (Genesis 1:27), in the image
of God, and are therefore entitled to full dignity and
equality. The Jewish people are all too familiar with
discrimination and worse, and we reject it however
Australian law should guarantee equality; mar-
riage being both a religious and a civil status.”
The declaration comes as the 2011 National
Labor Women’s Conference passed a resolu-
tion calling for “equal access to civil marriages,
regardless of the gender of either partner”. At-
tendees included Queensland Premier Anna
Bligh and Minister for Women Kate Eliis. ACT’s
Chief Minister Katy Gallagher has also recently
expressed support for marriage equality.
The resolution will be included in discussions
during the Party’s National Conference in De-
cember, where gay rights activists hope a firmer
stance on the issue will be made.
Australian Marriage Equality National Convener,
Alex Greenwich, welcomed the support.
“This level of support and advocacy from within
the top ranks of the ALP will be key to delivering
the outcome that a majority of Australians will
want from Labor’s National Conference.”
Lesbians were among the thousands who
protested ag ainst sexual assault at the recent
S l u tWa l k rallies in Melbourne and Brisbane.
Sparked by a comment by a p olicemen in
Toronto, Canada, who said, “Women should
avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be
victimised”, the event has gone global.
In Melbourne, the vibrant crowd, some dressed
in fishnets and mini-skirts, marched through
the city chanting “Yes means yes! No means
no! However we dress! Where ver we go!” after
hearing inspirational spe eches from academics,
a sexual assault counselor, a sex worker and a
Org anisers hoped to send the message that
sexual assault was unforgiveable, no matter how
a woman is dressed.
In Melbourne, author Dr Leslie Cannold said
it was important to reclaim the word “slut” and
change its connotations.
“ The word slut says that women deser ve to be
raped or molested or bashed if we like sex or if
we’ve had sex or had sex with ‘too many people’
or if we dress in ways that others judge as sexy or
skimpy ... I say, bugg er that.
“ Today we are taking back the word slut.
Reclaiming the word is g oing to disempower it.
Gays have re claime d the word queer,
and good on them.”
Trans man Cody Smith bravely admitted to
the throng he had been sexually assaulted as a
woman, and after he transitioned. “I spent far too
many years blaming myself for my own rapes. I
am sick of women’s and sur vivors’ voices being the
only ones speaking out ag ainst rape. It is not the
responsibility of sur vivors to educate e ver yone
else about rape,” he told the cheering crowd.
In Brisbane, the event was organised by the
Australian S ex Party. Tiara Shafiq, rap ed after a
swingers’ party, she told the crowd : “Slut shaming
and rape culture is not going to go away.
“I don’t care if you are the bastard child of Paris
Hilton and Voldemort and your full-time job is as
a stripper ... and you are the only girl for miles -
you still do not deser ve to be assaulted or raped.”
