Sometimes ladies, you don’t know if you
should glue it, screw it, drill it or pin it to
the wall. If the U-Haul is parked in the
drive way and you want to hang the Hers & Hers
bathrobes, you need to know how. There is no
simple prescription for what you should use and
when, but here’s a g uide to some basic alternatives
available on today’s market.
Best for fixing wood to wood or masonr y (brick
or concrete work), there are three common types
Bullet-head - g ood for general joiner y work
Flat-head - for attaching panelling to timber
Masonr y – for fixing timber to masonr y
(made from hardened steel)
Best for fixing to almost anything , there are
two main types (with the exception of security,
hexag onal screwheads, or bolts):
Cross head also known as Phillips head –
driving screws for a secure fix or if you are
planning to use a drill to fasten your scre ws.
Flat head - not so common these days as they
were designed for their ease of use when
using a hand screwdriver.
Screw heads are either raised, flush or
concealed. If you are not planning to remove
the screw and you want to conceal a joint,
you can cover it with filler.
With both nails and screws, the rule of thumb
is g alvanised or coated for exterior use, and
bright (known for their ‘shiny ’ surface) for
interior use. Make sure your nail or screw
is long enough to penetrate well and tr uly
through your fixture into the wall or floor
by half ag ain of its length. Most impor tantly,
trade quality of all fixing s is best. Cheap nails
bend and poorly manufactured screw-heads
There are many types of increasingly sophisticated
adhesive on the market. They are a popular
alternative to nails in many applications.
Polyvinyl adhesive (PVA) is perfect for repair
to wood and re-fixing joints in furniture.
Super glues are used for adhering metal, glass
and ceramic. Epoxy-resin glue consists of a
two-part kit that forms an incre dibly strong
bond with almost anything .
When using super glues and epoxy-resin mixes,
care should be taken to avoid contact with skin.
If you get general purpose adhesive on your
hands rub them in flour or dry-fill powder
for easy removal. Adhesive is also available in
cartridges and when used with a glue g un it is
extremely useful for any simple DIY job.
When attaching heavy items to a weaker surface
such as shelving to masonr y you will ne ed to
secure the fixing with a wall plug. Attach the wall
plug to masonr y by drilling a hole the size of the
plug and hammer to a tight and flush fit. Make
sure you choose the right size plug to match the
screw ; details are given on the packaging .
Spring toggles, which pop open to form a non-
return base when pushed through a drilled hole,
are used on plasterboard and hollow wall cavities.
