Slide cabaret bar on Oxford St has thrown
open its doors to a variety of productions
over the past couple of years and despite the
varying levels of accomplishment of the performers
that may grace the stage, one thing is certain, the
vibe and the food always stand up to scrutiny.
On this occasion, Slide is playing host to Alice
and Alan's Adventures in Wonderland, a new
musical being staged to take advantage of the
a erglow of goodwill a orded by Mardi Gras.
e evening that I attend, the goodwill is in
abundance as the show is also being performed
as a fundraiser for ACON, so the audience is
forgiving and ready to laugh at the jokes (however
slim) and support those on stage (no matter how
dubious the talent).
e food however needs no helping hand. e
Chef, Mark Kuzma has gone all out to accompany
the Wonderland theme and thus we have a
surprising array of dishes that not only please the
eye but the palate too. e entree, 'Tea and Cakes'
o ers up a tea party dish that the Mad Hatter
would approve. Duck Parfait with Tea Jelly and
Crispy Toast; Gruyere and Goat Cheese Cup
Cake; Parmesan Tuile, Mushroom Macaroons
and Salmon Tartlettes. Tasty and innovative. e
duck parfait sweet and rich, the macaroons sticky
and chewy sandwiched by a mushroom cream,
the Parmesan Tuile sharp and crisp.
Main course is equally inventive. e 'Smoked
Caterpillar' is in fact a Chicken Paupiette, with a
smoked foam for eyes and asparagus legs.
Dessert is a delight. e 'Pasta of the Day'
proves to be a chocolate tagliatelle with Grand
Marnier ice cream adding to the decadence
and white chocolate shavings continuing the
