A star is born
Lucy Maunder takes to the stage in
the world premiere of Dr Zhivago.
Cec Busby reports.
Performer Lucy Maunder has come a long way since yodelling Peter
Coombe's 'Juicy Juicy Green Grass' to family and friends as a
youngster; this month the Western Australian Academy of Performing
Arts (WAAPA) grad will originate the role of Lara in the musical adaptation
of Boris Pasternak's beloved epic novel Dr Zhivago alongside musical theatre
luminary Anthony Warlow.
Triple threat (singer/actor/dancer) Maunder, whose love of musical
theatre started a er being accepted at WAAPA, originally wanted to be a
prima ballerina, but confesses that "watching at's Entertainment with my
Grandmother when I was younger inspired me to want to do all three."
Her rst gig in the biz was when she was cast in a Harp on the Willow
opposite yet another musical theatre legend, Marina Prior. "It was a play
about the life of Mary O'Hara, the wonderful Irish singer/harpist who was
a sensation in the '50s.... It was a dream rst job, we played at the Comedy
eatre in Melbourne and I had a ball." Four years later Maunder is chu ed to
nd herself cast in the world premiere of Dr Zhivago. Working with Anthony
Warlow is proving to be a particular highlight for the young performer.
"I feel very blessed to be a part of this show and this process," admits Lucy.
"It's really very exciting, and working alongside Anthony is fantastic. He's
such a giving performer, so focussed and his acting and singing are awless.
I think any performer can learn so much by being in a rehearsal room with
So how does she think the musical stands up against Pasternak's novel
and an already very successful cinematic adaptation? " e musical absolutely
encapsulates the star crossed lovers' tale. It's incredibly romantic, and Lucy
Simon's score is perfect for the emotion of the piece and the style. It is one
of the best dramatisations of a novel that there is in my opinion. It's di erent
to the 1965 lm but obviously has similar elements. However I will not be
blonde like Julie Christie!"
