talent for rapping.
For Filipino born Sammy G, music was of particular importance
growing up, the young singer songwriter lost her whole family
(mother, father and sister) at an early age, so music became a critical
outlet to express her feelings. "I grew up in a refuge," says Sammy, "so music
became a very important way for me to express my emotions and release my feelings. I
would say that most Filipinos have strong musical talent in our blood, it's our culture."
She confesses her earliest musical memory involved locking her parents out of her
bedroom "so that I could play the electric guitar" ... "in saying that I was completely
out of tune," she laughs. Initial career plans to be a doctor or lawyer, were shelved
a er her parents passed away -- and Sammy found respite in music. "I o en wonder
if my career path would have been di erent if they were still alive today," she muses.
Sammy credits Aussie rapper Maya Jupiter as the inspiration for her actually
considering singing as a career. "She mentored me when I was young and took
me to my rst concert, Public Enemy, from that point, it was all over. I needed
to sing, I needed to write and express the way I feel inside... My music started
all coming together a er that gig and it's never stopped since."
Indeed the young singer has already had some major career highlights
including touring with Bone ugs and Harmony in recent months. "I've
been following them since I was young and never dreamed I would ever
support them. ey are great guys."
When asked to describe her musical style, Sammy G responds: "Missy Elliot
meets Missy Higgins, Attitude mixed with emotion, style mixed with deep lyrics....
en mix it all together with a double shot of sex and RnB and that's Sammy G."
So what can the punters expect if they are lucky enough to see Sammy G play live?
"Energy, re, entertainment, and a great time," enthuses Sammy. "Someone once
described my live performances as like a volcano about to explode...I'll let the people
be the judge of that." As for her upcoming showcase at Soundcheck, Sammy says winning
the comp would "mean a lot to my music career which is my life".
