Who says you have to be Australian
to celebrate Australia Day? Amanda Palmer,
one of our favourite honorary Australians, is
ying over to release her newest album and play some
rockin' gigs. is queen of punk cabaret can't wait to
get back to Oz, and says she can smell the Vegemite
It's been a little less than a year and you're on your
way back to Australia. What can we expect?
e tour is technically my record release party. e
Sydney Opera House show is my rst big headlining
gig in Australia for this album and it's the day we're
going to unveil the record. e bill is crazy amazing.
Neil (Gaiman, of e Sandman fame) is going to read
something and Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gen-
tleman are going to play, as well as the Jane Austen Ar-
gument, which is an incredible duo from Melbourne.
Last time you were in Australia you recorded
Amanda Palmer Performs The Popular Hits Of Ra-
diohead On Her Magical Ukulele. You also recorded
a second album.
e second album is Amanda Palmer goes Down
Under and it's basically half live tracks recorded at
the Sydney Opera House, in Hobart, and in Adelaide
and studio tracks I recorded in Adelaide. One of the
tracks -- which is completely a new thing for me -- is
a club track called 'Map of Tasmania'. is is like a
bumpin' dance track, which is a rst for Amanda
Palmer. I'm about to shoot a video for it in New York.
Basically we're making this ridiculous art tag dance
video with a bunch of crazy dancers wearing art mur-
kins. It's gonna be awesome. e song is really hilari-
ous and the lyrics are absurd and it looks like I'm go-
ing to do a remix with Peaches. It'll be awesome. She
wrote a rap to go over it and we're gonna do a remix.
Will you be recording in the studio this time
I may record some of the shows, but this trip in
particular is really about sharing this record with
everybody, not making a new one. My time is pretty
packed and I'll be ying all over the place constantly,
pimping the record and talking to press and playing as
many shows as possible. And doing some weird stu
too. I'm looking forward to going to really strange
gigs there. I have a fantasy that I'm going to get myself
to a coal mine and play a gig for the unsuspecting coal
miners with a few of my fans for support.
I think they'd dig the ukelele.
I think they'd dig the 'Map of Tasmania'
Last time you were in Sydney you invited
everyone to the Sydney Opera House for a
surprise sing-a-long and book swap. Will
you be doing something similar this year?
Last year was fantastic because people in
Sydney were just starting to get into Twit-
ter. I think this year things will be even more
fun. When I'm travelling at breakneck speed
the best way to figure out what's happening is
following my blog (amandapalmer.net), but
if you want to know what's really happening
you follow my Twitter (twitter.com/Amanda-
Palmer). And that's usually how I do crazy shit
