New Year's resolutions can
bring freshness to our lives by
setting out our intentions for
the year ahead. Are yours wilted and
dried up before the end of
January? Michelle Sanders reports.
As a life coach, I can increase your chances
of turning those resolutions into a successful
and sustainable reality! Here are a few guide-
lines that could make the difference between
a petered out goal, and one that catapults you
onto new and exciting paths.
Firstly, how about reflecting on the year just
gone? What were your successes? What were
your let downs, and why? What can you learn
from these experiences? Then, as you decide
on what is important to you this coming year,
how about setting those priorities as goals,
rather than calling them New Year's resolu-
tions? Sometimes just changing the language
can shed a different light on old ways of doing
When you are clear on what your goals are,
hold them close to your heart rather than
sharing them too soon. This will help to gath-
er energ y and momentum. Now, write down
one inspiring, yet measurable goal, and record
your planned completion date.
Know that behind every great goal, there is
an even greater action plan. Goals are doomed
to fail without one. Outline all the steps you
will need to take in order to achieve your goal.
You could even include which obstacles may
get in your way. And whilst you are at it, iden-
tify the type of support you will need as you
Once you have the plan, diarise those steps.
Let them be beacons of light shining from the
pages of your calendar. And now, take action!
To maintain your momentum, check in to
see if you are on track, tweaking your direc-
tion as needed. Try writing your goal/s out
in colours or use images to illustrate your
goals, and pin them up in strategic positions
throughout your home or office. Remember
to support and acknowledge yourself along
the way. Be positive, seeing your success as an
already achieved reality.
Explore your own attitude towards change.
