For most of us, Christmas is a season of joy and celebration and
a time to indulge in all things naughty and nice; whilst summer is all
about outdoor activities, partying and catching up with friends and
family. But for others, Christmas is not always the season to be jolly and
the buzz of summer related activities only ser ves to highlight feelings of
loneliness and isolation.
Here at the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard, we find that summer can
be an emotional time for some of our callers.
"I do find that some of the calls I receive during this season are about
the caller feeling down or feeling left out," says one of Switchboard's
counsellors, who does a two hour

"Problems or emotions that
may have been repressed pre-
viously can surface during the
holiday season because of the
extra down time that some of us
have or maybe it's just the sheer
amount of activities that we feel
we should be participating in but
aren't" she continues.
The reasons for increased feelings of negativity are many. Some of
us look towards the end of year with a sense of expectation, only to be
disappointed when hopes and dreams are not fulfilled. Others, who
have lost a loved one through the end of a relationship or death, find
the festivities a particularly painful reminder of that loss.
"And then there are those who don't have the support of family or
friends because of their sexuality or perhaps experience some difficulty
in connecting with others" adds our volunteer counsellor.
While this period is indeed a challenging time for many, there are a
number of resources available to help ease the pressures of the holiday
season and Switchboard is one of them.
Gay and Lesbian Switchboard has provided the Victorian lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) communities with a
free, anonymous and confidential telephone counselling and informa-
tion service since 1991. And as the ser vice has now expanded to include

If you feel like you're lonely or that you've been left behind, give us a
call and have a chat with one of our volunteers.
As one of our volunteer counsellors says: "No one likes to feel isolat-
ed so it's definitely comforting to hear someone else's voice and to share
your thoughts and feelings with another human being. Sometimes it
just helps to know that you're not alone".
