Singer songwriter Mary Gauthier
went on an amazing personal
journey with her latest album,
e Foundling. e release chronicles
Gauthier's journey of exploration as she
uncovers the truth behind her adoption
-- it's a very personal album and one
that has garnered the musician critical
and public acclaim.
is November the Louisiana-
born Gauthier returns to Australia
to play a series of concerts, including
the women's music festival at
Mullumbimby, and many of the
songs from the release will nd their
way onto the stage...
Music has always played an
important role in Gauthier's life. In
fact, she says that many songs "spoke
to me personally and probably saved
my life", explaining that "it was
songwriters that I trusted, more than
any adult in my world..."
She cites classic tracks such as
'American Pie', 'Killing Me So ly',
'Knights in White Satin',
Seventeen' as all sharing a fond place
in her heart.
Surprisingly, the singer was 35
before she wrote
her rst track. "I
fell in love with
song writing a er I
kicked a bad drug
and alcohol habit,
and went on to make
a career out of it," she explains.
Recording her most recent release
(her sixth studio album) was quite a
cathartic experience. " e Foundling
was a journey," says Mary. "I had to
write six records before I could write
this one, it took every bit of experience
I had to make this record.
"Writing a concept record is a real
challenge, and to write a concept
record about your own adoption,
well... you can imagine the di culties
involved. It took years to get it right.
I re-wrote and re-wrote until nally
the songs t together like a puzzle.
Kinda like how my life ts together
like a puzzle."
Rather like her songs too, for
which Gauthier says the music and
lyrics o en arrive simultaneously.
"Words and music always come
together for me, although songs
always take a long time to come fully
to life. I have a lot of patience for the
process, and I need a lot of patience.
ere's no controlling how long it
takes to get there with a song, all I can
do is stay with it until it is done."
With her tour
Gauthier is looking
forward to reuniting
with the new friends
she met on her past
trip (earlier this year)
and says she loves "the opportunity to
connect with people and see their eyes
light up when they nd themselves in
the songs I write. I LOVE this life I
am living, and I love connecting with
people through songs."
She thinks Australian audiences
connect so well with her music because
they appreciate "honesty".
" ey like good stories, especially
stories about people who have had a
hard go of it. And these are the kinds
of stories I tell, and the kind of songs
I write. is has been my life, it's been
my experience that the challenges are
what make me grow, it's what I know
best. Rising above the pain and singing
through the hurt. And believing in love,
no matter how hard it gets..."
