Would you believe it's been almost 12 months since
e Abercrombie Hotel opened its doors to the
Sydney lady-lovers for a regular night of loungey
chit-chat, beers and sweet, sweet tunes? It started
with a mighty huge bang in October 2009 and in
its short time changed venues (now up the road at
e Clare Hotel), provided countless ladies with a
place to chill-out and chat-up on a monthly basis,
and showcased just some of the brilliant talent in
our beloved city.
In celebration, Chicks with Picks has a cracker
of a birthday bash planned, including the launch
of a compilation CD set to bring some of the most
brilliant talent directly to your iPod/CD player/
PC/whatever, whenever. Regular performers Sally
Hackett, Bonney Read, and Genevieve Chadwick
and Pilot Darcy all have tracks at the ready, and the
disc in its entirety can be previewed and ordered on-
line at chickswithpicks.bandcamp.com. It's available
for only $10 online or at the gig, with 100% of the
proceeds going directly to the artists immortalised
on the disc.
In addition, the aptly named "Toastie Lady" will
be coming on board this month to delight your
tastebuds with all manner of delicious treats (or,
more speci cally, the world's most delicious toasted
So head along to e Clare Hotel in Ultimo on
October 10th to support some of the fantastic tal-
ent that is happening in our community. It'll be sure
to give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside (and I'm not
just talking about the toasties!)
Ra Ra Riot
The Orchard is debatably
one of the most romantic
albums released yet this
year. Baroque pop/indie
rock at its absolute nest,
it's not a great leap from
debut release The Rhumb Line, but somehow manages
to be no less charming. Ra Ra Riot have taken their
time with this recording and it shows. Part Vampire
Weekend, part Fleet Foxes, these guys (and gals) are
onto a good thing and they're sticking with it.
It's been a bloody long time
since Aussie siblings Ella and
Jesse Hooper graced our
airwaves in the form of Killing
Heidi, some six years in fact,
and on this debut/comeback
album it certainly shows.
It comes as no surprise that the lyrics have matured as
much as their once-dreadlocked do's, with a musical style
that seems to channel Fleetwood Mac in style.
De nitely more middle-of-the-road than chartbusting-
smash-hit, but lovely nonetheless.
If The Blow and Soko had
a baby it would be Tender
Forever's Melanie Valera.
The electro-pop lady
(and out lesbian) is pretty
much the cutest thing
to come out of France since, well, forever. The
sweet and sincere lyrics, delicate harmonies and
delightful beats and bleeps of No Snare are the
perfect soundtrack to your long commute induced
daydreams, or a walk by the lake on a beautiful
It's been but a few short months since acoustic folk
pop duo Bluehouse hit the road, but it seems the
bright lights and big cities call once again.
If you've never before been witness to a Bluehouse
show, think audience stage dancing, table stripping
and forward rolls and you might be somewhere in the
vicinity of the fabulous stage show presented by the
endlessly talented Jacqueline Walter and Bernadette
The ladies are hitting the Clarendon Guest House
on October 23rd, before returning to Newtowns
'Notes' on the 24th, reliving the days of Early Sunday
gigs at the Three Weeds by kicking the night off at
the early bird time of 6pm. Also in tow will be the
talented Julia Day on drums and the stupidly funny
Jackie Loeb as special guest.
Book your tickets now to make sure you don't
miss this dynamic duo in action!
