Veronica Newman and Suzie Wright are the
two women responsible for the long-running
and successful Girls Own Adventures tours and
women’s golf weekends which they run from their
own fully independent travel agency AlburyKent
Travel. Celebrating ten years this year, Girls
Own, members of ILGTA for many years, was
designed to address the issues surrounding
lesbians and travel. So far, they’ve covered a
lot of ground: African safaris, trekking in Nepal,
Mauritius, Vietnam and South America.
“Our trips are for travellers who are truly interested
in discovering unusual destinations and prefer to
do so in small friendly like-minded groups,”
Suzie told LOTL. “Our philosophy is to provide
holidays with a difference, embracing a soft
adventure component, combined with comfort and
safety – all in a friendly, fun, supportive and safe
environment designed especially for women.”
Golf is a focus of many of their holidays. These 4
star standard or better excursions geared around
an exercise many lesbians find hard to resist
include stays at the best hotels which access
international standard golf courses, and you can
enjoy cocktails and conversation along with friendly
Kangaroo Valley on New South Wales’ picturesque
south coast is the site for their annual Women’s
Golf, Tennis & Leisure Weekend in November.
“Each year we book out the resort with about 120
women, offering the option to play two days of golf,
compete in the Mavis Cup Tennis Competition or
just kick back relax in preparation for the Saturday
night presentation and party.” The event sells out
each year, without even advertising. The Kangaroo
Valley Winter Weekend came about because
everyone wanted more of the same, but this is a
quieter weekend with about 45 women, one night’s
accommodation, golf two days, and dinner with a
Christmas in July theme.
With lesbian exclusive events for singles as well
as couples rising in popularity (think Dinah Shore
Weekend and Girlfest on the Gold Coast) Girls Own
attempt where possible to match single people into
twin share thus avoiding costly single supplement.
Their trips are popular with single women who
make up about half the group. “We offer a safe way
for women to travel and make new friends. While
on tour we go to lengths to make sure everyone is
comfortable and included,” adds Suzie.
And if you like a little exoticism along with your
golf, the upcoming Back to Bali Luxury women’s
week from May 20 should please, especially
since non-golfers and golf widows get to laze
by the pool, enjoy spa treatments and shop till
they drop! France: Women, Wine and Walking
from August 29 also looks beyond the golfer’s
horizon, transporting travelers to the Loire Valley
and visiting many of the legendary castles
and gardens established by famous women
such as Catherine de Medici. With easy walks
through beautiful countryside and a side trip to
Bordeaux, the world’s most famous wine region,
this is a Girls Own getaway for the connoisseur.
