Based on the acclaimed play by Jonathan Harvey, this lm was originally commissioned
by the BBC but received such critcial acclaim that it earned a cinema release. Now over a
decade since it rst saw the light of day, Beautiful Thing has been rereleased by One Stop
and would make a great addition to your collection.
Set in the working class UK community of Thamesmead Estate, this urban tale of sexual
awakening delivers up plenty of opportunities for secrets and lies as its young cast face up
to life and their burgeoning sexuality.
The lm's main focus is on Sandra and her teenage son Jamie. Jamie is a gentle soul, often
victimised by the other students, he carries a torch for school mate Ste, the local jock and
town heartthrob. It's unrequited love until the day Ste nd himself at the wrong end of a
beating and ees from his alcoholic father to the relative saftey of neighbouring Jamie's house.
The pair bunk in together and gradually a sexual awakening occurs - but will manly Ste be able to come to terms with what
his relationship with his weedy young pal Jamie means? Could it be love?
Director Hettie Macdonald secures honest performances from her young cast and Glen Berry is particularly persuasive as
young Jamie. Eastenders' Tameka Empson is also a great nd as the churlish teenage Leah, whose passion for drugs is only
matched by her love of Mama Cass.
