If you're even the slightest bit familiar with the Sydney lesbian
scene then you'll no doubt already be acquainted with local punk-pop out t
Bonney Read. e tting namesake of two of history's most infamous (and
ferocious) female pirates (Anne Bonney and Mary Read); musicians Jess, Kat,
Hayley and Arkhea are bringing back the attitude to chick rock with the might and
power of a freight train.
Upon seeing the girls perform you'd never in a million years guess that the
band formed a mere eight months ago, kicking o a run of live performances at
Newtown RSL, Chicks with Picks and the much-missed ursday night indie-
fest, Snatch & Grab.
ey've since gone on to wow mass audiences at Mardi Gras this year, but more
recently performed a killer set at Sydney's Metro eatre as part of Emergenza --
the world's biggest live band competition. e girls ploughed their way through
the heats and are now sharpening their axes for the semis in October/November
e ease, precision and
passion with which this band
performs is largely thanks
to ridiculous hours spent
rehearsing - made much easier
by the fact that they all live in
the same household -- but it
hasn't always been smooth
sailing. ey started o in a
warehouse in Marrickville, but a er Hayley cruci ed herself on a stray nail and a
brief encounter with a pole-wielding neighbour (apparently none too impressed
by Arkheas 2am double-kick) the girls decided to try something a little less rock 'n'
roll. Now residing in a far com er abode in Sydney's Inner West, much of their free
time is devoted to writing songs at the kitchen table.
When asked why people should come see Bonney Read perform, the girls have
this to say: "We don't ask people to come and watch us play, we ask them to come
to a gig so that we can play for them" and it's this ethos that has made Bonney Read
already so loyally followed by so many. It's simply not a Bonney Read gig without a
mass of ladies belting out the lyrics and screaming song requests.
So what's next for Bonney Read? ey'll be launching their debut EP at
GiRLTHING July, in true Vegas style. ink Burlesque, magicians and all
kinds of debauchery as well as some serious fundraising for future Bonney Read
To get in on the action and grab a copy of the new disc, head to Qbar on July 17, and
don't forget to check out their new web site at bonneyread.com.
