This June long weekend the Blue Mountains will host the country's biggest
LGBT art event -- bentART. Spawned in 2005, the brainchild of three
mountain lesbian women, this annual exhibition quickly went state-
wide, and now invites LGBT artists from across Australia to submit work to
be eligible for not just kudos, but an array of prizes.
bentART also provides the opportunity for art lovers to purchase inspiring
work at affordable prices, making the 90 minute journey from the Sydney
CBD well worthwhile.
bentART is one of the mountains' most well-attended winter attractions,
with crowds of LGBT and LGBT-friendly denizens enjoying bentART
amidst the annual Queen's Birthday long weekend events. Both established
and emerging artists regularly exhibit, and with the popular People's Choice
award, every visitor has the opportunity to nominate their favourite over the
four days that the festival plays out.
Ser ving fine local food and wines in the ambience of Wentworth Falls
School of Arts, the bentART opening on Friday June 11 provides art
lovers with a relaxed opportunity to connect with the hottest artists in the
emerging arts scene. The venue (an inter-war theatre on the Great Western
Highway) is worth seeing for its own sake.
"June is a pink time in the Blue Mountains," bentART inc. President Julie
Martin says. "As well as bentART we have the annual Blackheath Dance and
Three Sisters Ball, and a new umbrella festival 'Pink Fest' incorporating all
kinds of Blue Mountains LGBT events."
The bentART project has always maintained a strong and creative lesbian
energy, ensuring the original vision remains a conduit for LGBT self-
expression in a variety of genres. "When you do something
you should burn yourself out completely, leaving no trace of
yourself," 2009 award winner Pamela Hourani says of her own
guiding creative principles, evidenced in her expressionistic
human studies which typify the courageous work regularly
experienced at bentART.
"bentART is a platform for lesbian artists to move towards
solo exhibitions," Pres. Martin outlines. "This year we've
added new entrant, indigenous and youth categories. The
vision of bentART is constantly evolving and endlessly
As well as providing a space for artistic expression,
bentART also increases the visibility of queer art in the wider
community. Why not make the journey to the mountains and
see what's on offer?
