When comedian Jackie Loeb was just
starting out, she was repeatedly cast as pre-
historic animals. "I think I found my niche
market there," she tells me. At the time, Jackie was
simultaneously working as a food demonstrator at
Woolworths and as a nanny (she said she le a four
month old in a bouncing Jolly Jumper in another
room while watching Oprah). Somewhere between
Oprah and the bite-sized samples Jackie thought,
"What can I do to be completely irresponsible and do
my own work?" Stand up comedy.
Since then we've seen Jackie on Good News Week,
Spicks and Specks, 20-1, e Side Show, and at a sell-
out season at the 2009 Sydney Cracker Comedy Fes-
tival. It has been 18 years of comedy and Jackie said,
"What do I have to show for it? An eight year old
computer and Home Brand oatmeal."
She also has a brand spanking new show as part of
e Sydney Comedy Festival, Jackie Loeb Sings the
Worst Songs Ever Written.
e show is one hour and sees ve wig changes, a
back up dancer and y songs. "Every song people
have suggested I do I've put in the show." Also expect
some stolen choreography from the Nintendo Wii.
Jackie, who told me she is "not in the hip parade as
a thirty-something woman," has included songs from
as far back as 1963 and contemporary hip hop from
2003. "If 2003 can be contemporary?" she asks me.
e show is a celebration of bad songs, though
Jackie says "it's not just gratuitously putting down
songs. It's an exploration. I give scienti c theories
as to why songs are bad." One theory? " at when
you hear a song over and over again you get sick of
it, which makes it bad." Reality TV is guilty of this
over-saturation and Jackie explores that exploita-
tion in her show. She has promised a Susan Boyle
tribute, among others.
Jackie told me that the more familiar she be-
comes with the songs the more endearing she nds
them. "Like 'Who Let the Dogs Out'," she said,
"I've begun to appreciate it musically. e lyrics
are a bit na but there are still drums and a reggae
I asked her why people should see her show.
"Because it guarantees to be worse than the Brit-
ney and Whitney concert combined. And I'll be
lip syncing. And wearing oversized underpants."
I'll be front row. Where will you be?
