What is it that compels a person to strip
naked and pose for the camera? Is it ex-
hibitionism? Or something else entirely?
Ask photographer Spencer Tunick, whose work
features mass nude installations and the answer
is found in the latter.
"Usually it's people who have some a ection
for the arts,' comments Tunick. " ey like the
idea of being a part of the creative process.
is process Tunick refers to has delivered
some spectacular results. It's not uncommon for
a 1000 or more of these 'art-loving' volunteers to
turn up to take part in one of Spencer's "human

and we are thrilled to have an artist of Spencer
Tunick's calibre produce one of his signi cant
installations on our doorstep," commented Ri-

' e Base' has been commissioned by the Syd-
ney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and according
to Tunick will celebrate "equality". A long time
proponent of gay rights, Tunick's work is sure to
reverberate for the gay community -- though the
photographer is quick to point out that this is not a 'gay only event".
"I'd like to see all kinds of people turning up to take part -- join in cel-
ebrating that at heart we are all equal."
