MARDI GRAS 2010
In the past ve years MisWhite has gone from the periphery of the dance
world to become one of its key players with gigs at DTPM, Heaven and Salva-
tion on her playlist. Hard to believe then that she never really intended to become
a DJ. "It never really entered my head actually until I was at the Burning Man Festi-
val in the Nevada Desert in 2003 and saw my friend Jacqui playing - I just thought
she looked SO cool, and I loved how the crowds were reacting to all her tunes and I
thought 'I want some of that!', so I bought an old set of decks from a friend when I got
back and it just went from there..."
Soon enough she was spinning the decks at her friends' birthday parties and be-
coming the tune guru of the neighbourhood. Her rst real gig came about a er play-
ing for a friend at the VIP Lounge in Heaven, "When it was time for me to nish
playing so the public could come in, the management opened up the Soundsha
(another room upstairs) and let me continue. ey must have liked what they heard
because they asked me to come back and play the main oor about a month later, and
that led to a two year residency."
MisWhite counts herself lucky to have played so many great clubs over the years:
"Heaven, DTPM, Fiction and Salvation - I don't know where I'm going to go from
there but I think that's what makes it all so exciting (I never saw any of those residen-
cies coming!!). At the moment I'm very happy playing with Salvation who I've been
playing for for over two years, I get to travel all around the world, meet some of the
most amazing people and play at some of the best parties you can imagine. I do have
some really fantastic parties in the pipeline which I would LOVE to talk about but
can't just now, but believe me as soon as they happen everyone will know!"
When asked to describe the MisWhite sound, the DJ is quick to explain that "it's
not JUST about the music".
She continues: "it's about the overall vibe and experience of the whole night so I
like to get dressed up in some kind of fabulous out t - it will will usually be some-
thing sparkly and a little bit out there. I'm all about enjoying what I'm playing
too - it's what I would like to hear if I wasn't behind the decks so I'll usually be
having a little dance and sing along of my own; soaking up the atmosphere and
enjoying the crowds reactions to the music. I also love to get involved with what's
going on on the dance oor - sometimes you catch someone's eye and you have a
little dance together."
So what makes for the perfect dance track? According to MisWhite it's "one
that evokes some sort of deep felt reaction". "Sometimes a track can have a melody
so intoxicating it just carries you away on the dance oor or the bass is so fantastic
you just have to dance like a maniac. But as soon as you hear it your heart skips a
beat, a big smile comes over your face and you KNOW you have to dance!!"
She admits she is really looking forward to playing at LoveGaze this Mardi
Gras season. "I've never been before but I've heard lots of really good things about
it. e DJ line up is great and I'm sure everyone will be in top form a er all the
weekends festivities. It's also my friends and my last night in Sydney a er what I
imagine be one of the best weeks of lives so it will be good to nish on a high..."
