Donna Penry speaks to Sara Quin, of Canadian, identical twin, lesbian rock band Tegan and Sara.
You have been recording for eleven years now. How
has your music changed over the years?
The band grows as we get older. I think we are
better songwriters, singers and performers now
and sonically a much better band. Although we
sometimes go back into the vault, back to the
punk band that we had in high school. There's an
energy there, it's little messier and a little more
embarrassing. I think that the core of what and
who we are will always remain the same. We just
ﬁnd ways to ﬁne tune it and we get better at deliv-
Your songs have been used on many TV shows and mov-
ies, including The L Word, also with a guest appearance.
We were really excited and honoured to be asked
to be included in the show. It was super exciting
to be seen on television and to have a soap opera
type show that was totally directed at our commu-
nity. I really love a lot of the music that they use
and love the show. There are lots of great actress-
es and lots of great storylines too. It was really fun
being on the show and everyone involved on the
show were very friendly, cool and down to earth.
pretty normal night for me (laughs). I’m typi-
cally a loner and kind of nerdy. Our life on the
road is quite civilised, we don't really party.
I wish it was more interesting. But strangely
being a rock star means that I listen to talk
radio and read. We get to travel a lot and get
to meet a lot of interesting people. But there's
not much excess and excitement.
I have to thank you for being 'out' lesbians in the
public eye, as this helps others come to terms with
