Looking for Ms LOTL
If you’re a long-term reader of LOTL, you’ll notice the many changes we’ve made over the past few
years. The magazine is growing and changing with the times, but what about its readers? How have you
changed over the years and what would you like from your magazine?
In October we conducted a survey on lotl.com. The questions we asked were designed to produce
answers to help us better understand the backgrounds, interests and needs of our readers. I’d like to
share with you some of those results, and paint a picture of the “typical” LOTL reader, if I can apply that
term to such a diverse and distinguished creature.
After carefully studying the data, one distinct type of LOTL reader emerges. For simplicity’s sake, let’s call
her Ms LOTL.
Ms LOTL is aged between 25 and 44 years old. Since our last survey she has reclaimed pride in her
sexual identity describing herself as irretrievably lesbian. Ms LOTL has a partner of some years standing
with whom she most likely lives. She is an employed professional earning over $50,000 per annum, holds
a tertiary level of education, and contemplates going on to postgraduate studies. She has been an avid
LOTL reader for between five and ten years and enjoys accessing the magazine online as well as in the
street. Ms LOTL is a brainy lady with an interest in politics and cultural affairs, but also likes the good life,
spending quite a bit of her hard earned cash on wining and dining, travel, entertainment and clothes. She
visits the hairdressers once a month, is fond of feathering her nest at home, and adds regularly to her CD
and book collection. She is currently considering the purchase of a new computer or upgrade, a work of
art or unique home wares, or perhaps a new car. If she doesn’t already own her abode such a purchase
is just around the corner. Ms LOTL is a loyal supporter of our advertisers using their services up to several
times a year.
Ms LOTL is not alone, which will come as a relief to those of you who don’t recognise yourselves in this
portrait. Although she might not know it, Ms LOTL turns the pages with Miss LOTL, who is 18 – 24, and
Madame LOTL, 45 – 54. They occasionally peruse the publication with Mr Gay LOTL, who also gets
between our covers each month.
While no survey is comprehensive this information suggests that our readership has carved out a good life
for itself. Sure of herself in love and sexuality, Ms LOTL has flourished professionally and financially, and
continues to read the magazine which reflects her identity. On the other hand, if you are reading this and
feel that you aren’t represented by any of these groups, please drop me a line and share your background,
thoughts, and interests. We need to hear much more from you, not less.
As we approach the end of the year I’d like to wish Ms, Miss, Madame, and Mr LOTL happy holidays,
season’s greetings, and all that. I look forward to hearing from you all next year.
