Ladyfest Melbourne 2009
by Erica Lewis.
So what is Ladyfest I hear you ask?
In brief, the roots of Ladyfest are
firmly planted in early 1990s USA,
through the underground feminist punk
movement Riot Grrrl. Riot Grrrl bands such
as Bratmobile and Bikini Kill have not only
had a permanent influence on what we now
call 'alternative' or 'indie' music, but also
produced feminist icons such as Bratmo-
bile front-woman Allison Wolfe and Bikini
Kill front-woman Kathleen Hannah. It is
interesting to note that Kathleen Hannah
was initially inspired to start playing music
after hearing Australia's own post-Riot Gr-
rrl band Matrimony. Matrimony and their
American counterparts went on to inspire
a whole new generation of Australian girl
bands via Sydney based Scooter Collective
(who have been putting on shows featuring
girl bands for ten years), as well as their
Melbourne counterpart 'Rock n Roll High
School' (which was established by Stepha-
In 2009, twenty years since Riot Grrrl
was spawned, those feminist icons are still
alive and kicking. Kathleen Hannah now
fronts electro feminist legends Le Tigre and
Allison Wolfe went on to initiate the first
ever Ladyfest in her hometown of Olympia,
Washington in 1999. Wolfe is now prepar-
ing for an Australian visit with her current
band Partyline, as they get set to headline
Ladyfest Melbourne 2009. This year's La-
dyfest Melbourne is brought to you by a tal-
ented group of ladies from varying artistic
and organisational fields, including mem-
bers of Scooter Collective and graduates of
Rock n Roll High School. As you can see,
things have come full circle and girl rock
history is about to be made.
Ladyfest Melbourne 2009 runs from
Wednesday 18th -- Sunday 22nd November,
offering a five day program of events de-
signed to showcase the creative talents of
women. 2009's festival will have a par-
ticular focus on representing independent
lesbian and queer female bands and artists
who are making and performing original
works. The festival has been made possible
through the generous contribution of Les-
bians Incorporated, who provide financial
backing to lesbians and lesbian friendly or-
ganisations through their community grants
