Stubbs travels with her girlfriend of two years, a
former US professional softballer and previously
shared a long-term relationship with her former
doubles partner Lisa Raymond. It has only been
recently that she has fully embraced her sexuality and
she hopes that by coming out, she will help teenagers
who may be struggling with gay issues. “I want some
16 year-old girl out there to think it’s OK.”
Following her announcement, Stubbs recently told
the Sydney Morning Herald, “wouldn’t it be great if
everybody who was gay said they were? If we said,
February 21st, or whatever, this is (World) coming out
day, it would be phenomenal.”
“I don’t hide who I am anymore. Everyone in the
tennis world pretty much knows who’s gay and who’s
not; the only reason I would like it spoken about more
publicly is that I wish everybody would realise that,
out of all those people you admire, out of 10 them,
four are gay, and I just want you to know that your
child can still idolise them.”
It’s all very L Word, isn’t it? We’ve watched tennis
pro Dana Fairbanks, struggle in series one with
coming out to her parents and then to her fans, but
in series two we see her flourish as a gay sports
icon, striking major advertising deals with Subaru
and making guest appearances at the Dinah Shore
So, who’s going to be next out of the locker room
closet? Come on girls, new balls please!
