something that is a crystallization of
a process. I’m not thinking that when
I’m writing it but that is what’s going
on. When I’ve written a song I am so
happy that that part is over. And I feel
so free because it’s like a bubble has
come out of my heart and now it’s in
Part of your attraction to Australia
is because it is not yet like the rest of
In America religion is taking over. It
is rearing its ugly head like a monster
about to die. The last throes before
religion is really obsolete. And people
are becoming so conservative, and
strict and judgmental. You almost
feel like people are being drugged.
Repression is really, really scary to me.
You’re coming here for Mardi Gras,
speaking about not being repressed…to
our omnisexual Festival…
[Laughter] Oh my god. You guys are so
great. I can’t friggin’ wait.
You’re playing Fair Day, which is a big
old gay picnic. What will you do for us?
If they let me I’ll do a two hour set. Lots
of new stuff. I’ll be adding a guitar player
so it’ll be rock-y. I’m going to do all the
songs that everybody wants me to do,
like, Damn! I Wish I Was Your Lover, As
I Lay Me Down, and all that. I’m going to
try and do every absolute most sexy song
I have. I’ll just vibe it by the audience. I
hope they don’t kick me off too soon.
The lesbians will decide. They won’t let
That would be great. I love the lesbians
there. They’re so fabulous… they’re not
fun here anymore. If someone says to
me, ‘Are you a lesbian,’ I’m going to say,
‘Only in Australia...’
We just might hold you to that.
You’ve said you’re omnisexual several
times. I really want to poke around a little
more in there. Will you let me?
[Laughing] Yes! Any time you want!
Who do you prefer, men or women?
[Deep sigh] Ohhhh, women. Women, when
you really love them. Really want them. I
feel with men there’s sort of this guilt that
I have: ‘Oh my god, they’re falling for
me. Shit. I can never take care of them.
I can’t.’ With men it’s so wrapped up in,
‘You’re mine, you’re mine, I need you
now.’ With women there’s this incredible,
almost otherworldly passion that
surrounds you, especially when you really,
really want someone and you have that
connection together. It happens not that
often, but then the passion is so incredible
it’s like a wave that carries you up so far
… and to me it doesn’t crash.
