JUST OFF OXFORD STREET IS A TEX-MEX
HEAVEN WITH KICKASS FUN.
A LOTL TASTING.
‘Twas two weeks before Christmas and all
through the office, the LOTL girls were
hanging for their end of year nosh-up…
Where better to head for some festive
season hedonism than the gay golden mile?
Just off Oxford Street is Yipi-Yi-Yo, a
good-humoured and tastefully appointed
restaurant serving modern Mediterranean
and Southwestern American cuisine based
on fresh seasonal produce – with some
saucy entertainment on the side.
It’s a lesbian and gay friendly venue, with
owner/manager Tony part of ‘the family’,
along with the odd lesbian member of the
waiting staff. Hostess with the mostess,
Carol, made sure that the LOTL gang
were seated comfortably, that our meals
were ordered to taste and served in good
time, and that bottles were uncorked at the
We enjoyed entrées of haloumi fritters with
roasted beetroot, bitter greens and hazelnut
dressing, chilli king prawn quesadilla with
tomato, basil and cheese, Atlantic salmon
with rocket and asparagus, and spring rolls
with aioli and soy and blue corn tortilla
cones, all $16.50. For mains we tucked into
grilled barramundi with skordalia, tomato,
olive & parsley salsa, Tijuana tenderloin
with rosemary mash & caramelised onion,
kickass chili beef with avocado, salsa, black
beans and tortillas, and Navajo eggplant
lasagne with coriander pesto (all $26.50).
For the sweet-tooths amongst us, the peanut
butter heaven & hell cake, and a “chocolate,
toffee and pecan thing” ($11.50) satisfied.
Yipi-Yi-Yo attracts a mixed and diverse
crowd, which makes sexuality a non-issue.
The ambience is sophisticated yet relaxed,
and in the latter part of the evening the
entertainers set the tone for frisky fun. We
especially enjoyed the Kath & Kim show
courtesy of Lesley and Trevor from Leave
It To Diva, and even indulged in a little
“audience precipitation”. Thank goodness
it’s BYO! Yipi-Yi-Yo makes the perfect
place for an end of year, beginning of
year catch-up with friends or colleagues,
or a fun summer dining destination with
your partner. So grab your chiquita and
book a table.
