FOR A SOPHISTICATED SAPPHIC
SOJOURN, MELBOURNE HAS
EVERYTHING IN THE WAY OF SHOPPING,
DINING, AND DAY TRIPS.
BY MERRYN JOHNS.
Plus it’s hosting the 2006 Commonwealth
Games, so whether you’re a sporty spice or
culturally minded girl, visiting Melbourne
during the XVIII Games will have you
going home with gold. Here are some tips
for planning your trip.
For a prime spot in the heart of
Melbourne’s arts, business and retail
precinct, there are few better choices
than the Adelphi (www.adelphi.com.
au). And why not stay in a Melbourne
architectural icon? This arty, contemporary
hotel is minimalist in style but warm and
welcoming. I was reminded a Mondrian
painting that has come to life. The
design features clean modern lines and
the décor, in a colour scheme of grey
and lemon, with touches of warm wood
and quirky furniture. It’s a refreshing
change from your usual big name chain
hotel. You’ll enjoy little touches like the
generously proportioned rooms with big
firm beds, and in the bathrooms fluffy
white bathrobes, deep tubs and Bvlgari
body care products. It really is more like
staying in an executive apartment than a
hotel. There’s an intimate bar for meeting
friends, and don’t forget to check out the
rooftop pool with views over the city.
Melbourne is the nation’s capital of
retail therapy, and the topography of
the city with its hidden laneways and
arcades makes for an interesting time
bargain hunting or looking for that little
something special. If you’re worried about
getting lost or missing out on the city’s
retail secrets, don’t sweat the small stuff:
Shopping Secrets (www.shoppingsecrets.
com) will help you shop like a local with
tours locating treasure troves worthy
of a decent spend like Flinders Lane.
Alice Euphemia has an eclectic range of
Australian designed clothing, jewellery
and special things (www.aliceeuphemia.
com); you could spend hours in Retrostar
Vintage Clothing (03 9663 1223) finding
funky threads, and Egetal’s distinct
jewellery (www.egetal.com.au) will have
you thinking ‘lesbian wedding’.
