WHERE WILL YOU RING IN THE
NEW YEAR? A NEW COMMUNITY
COLLABORATION HAS THE PERFECT
PLACE. A LOTL PREVIEW.
Pride might not have had the funds to
throw their New Year bash this year but
Sydney Leather Pride did, with a little
community spirit from Harbour City
Bears and New Mardi Gras. The result? A
wicked party at Sydney’s Entertainment
Quarter – formerly known as Fox Studios.
Fantasy NYE is a GLBT party that has
the blessing of Pride and the party muscle
of three groups who, well, know how to
party. Old school.
Instead of bankrupting their party with
overblown hard-standing scenic, the
crew is working with Norwest (lighting
and sound) and Oracle lasers to create
an otherwordly fantasy. The disco arenas
will consist of The Dome Underworld:
the dirty, dedicated Leather venue with
carved Roman columns suspended from
the ceiling and the leadlight domes will be
backlit to reveal the stunning architecture
of this much-loved party space. The
Secret Garden is the enchanted entrance to
the party, with trees, sparkling fairy lights,
creeping vines and mysterious meeting
places. This is also Bear spotting territory;
partygoers will notice the Harbour City
Bears club colours adorning the perimeter.
Club NMG makes the most of superclub
Stage 11 and lavish the majority of their
lighting budget on it to make it the “hands
in the air” party palace.
Okay, so where’s the lesbian appeal?
When Shannon Anthoness was asked to
be the Fantasy NYE poster girl
she “screamed around the house. It’s
“I love the fact that it’s three community
groups collaborating to make a night
of magic. New Mardi Gras stands for
sequins and fun, Sydney Leather Pride
for the raw sex of leather and the bears
are friendly and natural and fun to
be around,” Shannon told LOTL. To
Shannon, the theme of fantasy means
“being able to use your imagination to act
up, to be whatever you want.” She will
be going dressed as the Green Absinthe
Fairy, after Kylie Minogue in Moulin
Rouge. Her girlfriend of three years, Mel
Wulff, will be dressed as a Gothic pirate.
“Shannon loves dress-ups,” says Mel.
“And to me the theme of fantasy means
getting out of what your norm is and
having fun with it.” While Mel is excited
by the ambience of The Dome, Shannon
is looking forward to Stage 11 which
will have he atmosphere of “best party
in the world.”
