Home' LOTL : September 2005 Contents MEGAN PAUL WAS LOOKING
FOR CHANGE. SHE FOUND IT
IN THE BEAUTIFUL HAWKESBURY
A city-based change management
professional, Megan dreamt of living
in the bush and working as a massage
therapist. She trained in remedial
massage and as a Pilates instructor,
gradually shifting her focus from
corporate bodies to human bodies.
Megan worked for three years as a
massage therapist at a physiotherapy
clinic in Richmond. She then became the
newest practitioner at Hawkesbury Herbs
and Healing and she loves it.
Hawkesbury Herbs and Healing was
established in 2001 by herbalist and
homeopath, Sue Quin, and aims to
care for clients’ physical, mental and
emotional health. “The environment
we work in is great. It feels calm and
nurturing just walking in the door,” says
Megan. “It’s wonderful to be able to
be involved in a centre like this where
everyone brings their experience and
different approaches to our work. This is
beneficial to clients as we can draw on
each other ’s knowledge and ideas.”
Megan is the centre’s Pilates instructor
and also specialises in remedial, deep
tissue and pregnancy massage. Pilates
was developed in Germany over eighty
years ago by Josef Pilates, a World War
One survivor who saw the need for
patients to have a series of exercises they
could complete utilising the frame of the
bed they were in. It was then developed
to assist dancers and performers with the
physical stresses and strains of their work
and is now becoming one of the most
popular forms of exercise.
The method aims to achieve core stability.
This means stabilising and strengthening
the abdominal and shoulder regions to
provide balance and reduce the chance
of injury. It is a gentle form of exercise
which results in improved flexibility,
muscle strength, postural awareness, self-
confidence and physical conditioning.
Pilates exercises are gentle and enjoyable
and designed to respond to the needs of
everyday, life, work and play. “I work
with clients to find daily exercise that they
can do at home as well as coming to the
clinic or to classes. We work out exercises
that will suit not only their lifestyle, but
particularly address how they use their
body at work,” explains Megan.
The centre also specialises in pregnancy
care and hopes to become a leading centre
in the Western region for lesbian mums.
Pre-natal care helps resolve fears and
anxieties surrounding the birth, and helps
increase a sense of power and knowing
participation in birthing. Pregnancy
massage is relaxing and a wonderful way
to help with stress and depression that
can arise during pregnancy. Pilates is also
useful to deal with the postural changes
of pregnancy and the strain placed on
joints, muscles and soft tissue.
As one of the five women practitioners
at Hawkesbury Herbs and Healing Megan
has the opportunity to combine a range of
therapies in an environment which fosters
women’s health and wellness and is
lesbian friendly. “ We create a supportive
environment for clients and offer a range
of services including medical herbalism,
homoeopathy, iridology, hypnotherapy,
reflexology, meditation, counselling,
pregnancy and remedial massage and
deep tissue massage and acupressure.
