WINNER. SEXY GALEXY SPOKE
What are you doing at this year's DIVA
I've joined forces with the Four O'Clock
Dancers and we're presenting a show
about the expression of glamour through
dance and costume. It's a lycra
When did you start your drag career?
13 years ago because there was absolutely
nothing for the girls. The boys had all this
amazing energy and fun. A friend and I
dared ourselves to get up there and do
something. We began an act in Perth called
the Fish Vestites -- meaning women who
can do whatever the fuck they like. It took
a while for the girls to catch on that we
were just really camp. We went into a
talent quest, then gradually broke into the
drag scene, then I went solo.
When was Sexy Galexy the drag king
I read a story in LOTL in 1999 about drag
kings. It was the first time I'd heard that
term and once I found the label I found my
path. I'd always thought of myself as a
drag queen because I've always loved
glamour and dressing up in jewellery and
makeup. In a way I was forced to become
a drag king because girls can't be drag
queens. I would've loved to be a drag
queen but there was always a hoo-hah
because I didn't have a penis.
Your style of king is distinctive --
effeminate, lots of makeup. How did
that come about?
It took years of work. I have many
different looks. The makeup takes about
45 minutes to apply. I still feel more like a
big girl than anything else. When I was in
the US I had other drag kings ask me
where my masculine side was. But I'm just
being myself. In drag you can be anyone
or anything: it doesn't have to be gender
specific. I love being a little raving poof. A
lot of the young girls on the scene are little
poofs in dyke bodies. We're embracing our
Advice to emerging drag kings?
Don't be afraid, the audience is super-
supportive to new acts. There's nothing to
fear -- Sexy's here! There's a drag king
community now. When I started there
wasn't even anyone I could borrow
Has the Drag Industry embraced you?
They've been really good. They now
accept that I'm basically a drag queen with
real tits. Some lesbians have asked me
why I have a cock obsession but I'm not
trying to be a man.
What do you pack?
Rubber cocks I got when I was in America.
Mine's bigger than anyone else's.
Why should lesbians front up to the
Because women nominees can get lost in
the pile. The girls should be interested in
what's going on out there. And we need
more drag kings!
Best thing about being a drag king?
You get to see your spunky peers half-
naked backstage. e
